Major publishers wanted to get into this maybe 5-10 years ago, and it never really took off for them. I think it can sometimes be a good business model for indie games, and also I would really love to see an episodic plot-driven game bring back the fun of speculation about what is upcoming that TV shows used to have.

The king of this is Dark Dreams Don't Die that only got 2 episodes.

There was a moment in time when devs and studios probably pitched the episodic model as a solution to cost/time crunch. From memory, the most successful episodic release is The Walking Dead, which came after Telltale had been doing episodic games very several years to little fanfare, and then there was a big surge of similar attempts. Life Is Strange was another huge success but was also only episodic because they needed money so badly.

Hitman 2016 was released episodically, as well, and did pretty well in sales despite how square treated it.

They did go straight back to releasing the whole game at once for the sequels though

Which sucked, IMO. The episodic release model worked wonders for Hitman.

I played each level a ton of times in Hitman 2016, I wrung as much content as I could out of each map while waiting for the next. Hitman 2 & 3 I probably played less, would just finish a level and then go onto the next. And then go back to the levels I completed to unlock stuff, but not as much. There's probably a few maps I've only played a couple of times in 2 & 3

It adds a curated set of mods of various quality. It’s not the worst but not a must grab either.

It hasn’t been confirmed yet but Valve apparently banned the latest SciAdv VN (Chaos Head Noah) and Spike Chunsoft’s response was just to stop acknowledging the PC release in their tweets

might be the highest profile VN that Steam has banned to date? As steinsgate (same series) was pretty popular.

no indication of why either, or what differentiates it from the myriad of straight up h-games that Steam allows. AFAIK the SciAdv series is pretty tame as far as sexual content goes but I’ve only played Steins;gate

From what I understand it was the violent content which banned it, but that's still silly because its sequel Chaos;Child is on Steam and is probably more violent.

chaos head noah has no sexual content in it at all, even in the original japanese pc release. it does have gore, but thats it.

steam seems to have someone on their end who just arbitrarily bans any visual novel with school uniforms in it, even if there's no sexual content. a few yuri games have gotten hit despite no sexual content. likewise, outright porn games get through because they dont have school uniforms or arent visual novels.

I have no idea what any of this means. Which makes me scared to look it up because that usually means some genre of porn.

I can use context, so assume “VN” and “h-game” are adult games? I’m not a prude or anything, just never thought of fapping to my Steam Library.

I thought that stuff was all on itch.io, honestly.

VN is Visual Novel. They don't have to be about sex but they quite often are. h-game is 'hentai game' and hentai is a word for Japanese animated porn.

VN just means visual novel. Like Steins;gate, Ace Attorney, Necrobarista, Digimon Survive, Umineko, 999, Virtue's Last Reward, 428 Shibuya Scramble, etc

SciAdv is short for Science Adventure, which is the series that includes Chaos;Head, Chaos;Child, Steins;Gate and Robotics;Note. None of them are porn, but Chaos;Head gets kinda horny because the main character is a creep. Steins;Gate is considered an all time classic, the rest your mileage may vary.

visual novels are a genre of japanese game that are largely text and images. they were born out of the japanese adventure game genre. creators wanted to tell stories but increasingly found the need to include lame mysteries or puzzles an obstacle, so they made that stuff easier until it eventually got excised completely in favor of branching choices. that genre then eventually evolved into stuff like dating sims, like tokimeki memorial, or stuff that lightly reincorporates the adventure game elements, like phoenix wright.

since it was mostly born out of the Japanese PC gaming scene a lot of that stuff was porn.

Like I said, I knew this stuff was available, just didn’t know it was on Steam. I figured you had to go to specific vendor sites or something kinda like ordering actual porn on physical DVDs or whatever. Maybe because I see games come up sometimes with an “adult confirmation” in my discovery queue. And even that is sometimes because of “smoking,” which trips me right the gently caress out of my chair. On the same launcher as “coin-flip killer healed by blood showers.”

There's usually a person or two who wander into the thread when discussion of adult games on steam comes up and then posts about how bad the Steam store is because their frontpage is clogged with hentai and porn games. You have to opt in to be able to see them in the first place.

The whole consumer culture of porn games is insane, because they're either some rock bottom match 3 or rpgmaker hentai game, or it's trying to be pushed out as a serious real game, just with hardcore porn, and after raising a ton of money ($3 million for Subverse, Patreon of like ~$40k a month for Breeding Season) they end up as truly mediocre products that can't even do the porn part of it right.

40k a month doesn’t really pay for many devs. No idea the size of their company, but that doesn’t really seem to be enough to base the entire business around unless it’s an extremely small team.

In Japan PC games are for weirdo perverts. Proper respectable people use consoles. So PC VNs have porn in them because otherwise there's no market. If it does well you now have some money and can take the porn out for the console release.
