imo the biggest issue frankly is not not being able to figure out how to grow poo poo, it would be fighting off all the people. if for whatever reason that wasn't a problem, and you could make it through the first year, i'd say you have a real chance of going for the long haul with the exception of obvious dangers like getting dirt in your cut and dying of tetanus or the plague or whatever

like i grew up on a working farm and i am not remotely going to say i know how to do everything i need but neither do i think it's this unknown, arcane endeavour

Yeah if it comes to where I'm hitting The Road and just ghosting my job because it's completely moot, then there really isn't any way I can plan for a situation like that because climate change collapse is an event horizon. I can somewhat predict and mentally model how reality works before that point, and all of that breaks down once you hit the event horizon.

At that point it's all chance, minute to minute, day by day. Could have 5 different people lining up a shot on me on a given day and just deciding not to. I won't know, it's up to chance. If they pull the trigger, probably won't then either.
i liked the road too, but it's important to remember when envisioning the future that cormac mccarthy is a crazy person and his novels portray a terrifying dream world where every single person left on earth acts like cormac mccarthy

Dirt feels good on the hands. except when you are digging near gooseberries. then you need to wear some gloves. little bastard plant spicy hairs.

devils club is also a native plant here and man. terrifying spikes. I ran into a bunch when I took a wrong turn on a hike and turned a 2 mile down into a 10 mile down as I criss crossed down steeps then had to walk back up a loving mountain road. It's amazing how quickly you become uncoordinated while tired and dehydrated.

I've seen rats, bunnies, and raccoons in my yard a ton so probably any of the above. or slugs. slugs are a solid contenteder too.

I accidentally grew some potatoes in my compost this summer. I had like 3 perfect little tiny potatoes before was turning my compost and found em.

I wish there were bunnies around here but it's too far into the city, racoons with their dexterous little fingers are always a good suspect for nefarious shenanigans. I think I have seen surprise compost potatoes too.

Green onions are the easiest thing ever dude. I've already harvested 20 lbs of garlic, 100+ lbs of tomatoes (40lbs went into jars as sauce), endless kale and chard. Just growing in 570 square feet too.

But I can just turn on the tap and get all the water I want. If I had to rely on what fell from the sky, idk if I could grow anything.

This is the real fuckin key. Unless you got massive water barrels/cisterns and containment and processing - none of us are gonna have a good time if poo poo starts to fail big time.
