No, most student loans are public money lent directly by the federal government.

The student loan servicing companies can be lovely private companies, however. But it's not actually their money, they're just there on behalf of the feds to smash your knees etc.

America took the concept of public investment into educating the next generation's professionals and academia and twisted it into literal debt-peonage to the government. Beautiful to see. We're 1# at the thing we do.

Former slave country whose foreign policy revolves around debt peonage via the IMF and the dollar reserve status, strangely really adamant about student loans :thunk:

Makes sense the contradictions of American capitalism trace back to it's very roots.

im sure the rule is up to $20k so if it's less, it's whatever that is. I also just made this up so maybe it's genuinely just if you had an active pell grant $20k is yours

Larry said they are grants not loans so they aren’t inflationary to forgive.

But seriously this won’t be because they aren’t being paid on right now. This will be deflationary as some payments that aren’t being made are going to start back up.

I mean we do mercilessly mock non maskers but I doubt COVID thread goers are gonna actually attack people or anything.

But yeah like we aren't maxed out on long COVID sufferers right? And if we keep squeezing healthcare and don't find some cure for long COVID that population probably won't balance out until it's dying as fast as it's being made from new infections.

Good luck persecuting the sick when you are too sick to persecute them (because I know many will try anyway even if they too suffer, but it's gonna be hard on any would be persecutor who can't climb up the stairs to someone's house or move with enough force to throw a brick. Probably end up shooting themselves In the foot because their arm gave out mid shot).

Yeah, there's no question. A lot of posters here like to poo poo on the idea that reinstating loan payments is a big deal, but it actually is a really big deal. They needed something, because doing nothing meant literally blowing a hole hundreds of dollars wide in the monthly budgets of millions of families. I'm not even sure if there's really any precedent for causing that kind of direct and immediate financial harm to your constituency.
