Generations are just astrology for social science journalism.

interesting way of putting it.

for certain stuff, it makes sense due to the prevalence of lead leading to reduced IQ (though IQ is not a good measure in and of itself) and also criminal behavior in certain generations. But there are always multiple factors at work, such as increased criminalization of drug use (especially among certain groups), the extreme rise of importation of cocaine, crack and heroin to the US, generational poverty and also, importantly, the rise of the prison industrial complex and "tough on crime" policies.

In the medical science sense, seriously increased rate of colon cancer among millenials not only due to early detection.

Re: Trumps lovely lawyers

I think there are a couple of reasons Trump isn’t getting good lawyers (other than that he doesn’t pay).

Trump lies, and he lies to his lawyers and it likely becomes apparent to good lawyers pretty quickly that he’s not telling them the truth when they start putting together his case. This is a problem because making false statements in court gets you disbarred.

Good lawyers who get past the lies and figure they can work with it probably have looked at his cases and said, “you’re hosed, start working on a plea deal” (because they aren’t going to lie in court) which is an unacceptable answer to someone like Trump.

Trump certainly tells his lawyers to add inane Hillary and deep state bullshit into their filings and a good lawyer would tell him that’s irrelevant. Which would make Trump rage.

But the main reason is that Trumps MO, from his mentor Roy Cohn and buddies like Roger Stone and etc… is to rat gently caress the legal system by making absurd and idiotic filings that wedge themselves into cracks that have been bridged by norms and standard practices. So, lovely lawyers are part of the overall strategy. Since he’s a FPOTUS all the judges take everything very seriously and give him the benefit of the doubt on every marginal call because in their world an FPOTUS is a serious person who is the embodiment of rule and standards and not a clown honking a horn and making fart noises.

I was born in ‘78, and I’m pretty liberal. Further left than mainstream Dems anyway.

I can’t speak for other Gen Xers as most of the people I hang out with are at least a couple of years younger, but also very much liberal.

Except for my brother (‘81), who is definitely some flavor of chud. We live in different states and I don’t really talk to him much anymore unless it’s about his son, but he’ll definitely post the occasional 2nd amendment or “go woke go broke” type thing on FB. I’ve never seen any open Trump support from him at least. He was a Ron Paul guy back in those days.

We had DJ Shadow, though.

Except it wasn't Reagan who got us out of the 70's staglfation, it was Paul Volkner triggering the 1980 recession. Reagan's (and really, and president) had very little ability to affect the economy. Tax law and budgets are part of the tools for economic change, but compared to the ability the Fed has are not as impactful.

Reagan had the recovery handed to him on a silver platter and he took the credit for it.

the republicans got beat pretty hard in 1982 because the recession from Volker Shock was in effect.

After the working and middle classes were forced to bear the brunt for long enough, the economy recovered. The deregulation and union-busting happened alongside it.

I can’t believe how brazen the Barr memo is.

Since, in our opinion, Trump can’t be charged with a crime he obviously couldn’t be committing obstruction by interfering with the investigation into if he committed a crime.

Also, when he told comey to take it easy on Flynn and when Comey didn’t he was fired also can’t be obstruction because Comey didn’t accept the bribe? Like, WTF?

You're definitely getting closer to the New Constitution under the perfect Republican government, once all the stolen elections get cleaned up: He whose name is followed by "(R)" is not culpable. He who is found guilty may receive pardon by obtaining an "(R)". She whose husband has an (R) shall be judged by her husband. Only (R) may hold elected or appointed public offices. All others are charged under central, denominational laws, juries to be comprised of those with R.

And according to Mr Trump... https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trumps-recent-message-ag-garland-comes-sharper-focus-rcna44762

This sounds remarkably like... January 6. "We love you all but please go home", or in other words "I completely support the violence but need to make some statement to improve optics just a tad". Now the AG, by the lawyers' own admission, gets told "Well I can help reduce the anger and heat if you want help", or in other words "I'm going to continue asking for retaliation, up to and including violence, and you'd better do what I ask if you want it to go away, but I'll make it sound like I care".

"His highness has decreed your means of salvation, should you choose to cease your disappointing behaviors".

It's hilarious to see all the religious types who've flocked to him, especially all the end times-focused, Revelations-memorizing protestants, because Donald Trump looks and sounds and acts exactly like the Anti-Christ would, and he has the exact same type of pull on these people as the Anti-Christ is claimed to be able to have on all the weak-minded rubes and the false Christians, the ones that these folks all deride in their cautionary tales. There is an element of truth to it. Trump was never fully accepted into the club despite having the requisite amount of wealth because he is a boorish rear end in a top hat who built his empire by acting like a mobster instead of a feudal lord. Dana White and Vince McMahon were the same way which is why Trump is such good friends with them.

Of course none of this actually matters to the peons, it's just different stratospheres of elites posturing against each other.

It's a man's game, but boys will play

Yeah of course it's stupid and hypocritical for people to characterize trump as anything but elite (and elitist – he absolutely loathes most of the people who voted for him), but the differences between him and other elites are illustrative. It's not my original characterization, but basically Trump is boorish and dumb enough for average conservatives to see themselves in his reflection. He's more or less what they would be if they were rich. Sure he's from the east coast which is a knock against him, but at least the other coastal elites mostly hate him. Conservatives honestly think that Hollywood actors and college professors are more "elite" and out of touch because of their supposed cultural sway than the literal billionaire. Never mind that the academics and celebrities they hate most are far more likely to have come from poor or middle class backgrounds, and are the ones speaking up about social inequality. So elitist!
