Which makes it all the more frustrating when the call center wields it like the results have some sort of power over me. Or even worse, the customer.

Not that I'm knocking people who work call centers. I'm just knocking ours because it's indescribably awful.

I was just looking at it and I suddenly got this urge to get inside. No, not just an urge - more than that. It was my destiny to be here; in the box.
I finally got an interview!

For a remote job in another state.

That they want me to come into the office for.

When I told them that wouldn't be possible and requested a virtual meeting, they declined and said they're only looking for local applicants.

Like... my resume, application, and cover letter all have my address listed. This is a remote job

So that was fun while it lasted.

Fake edit: This is absolutely a dodged bullet but I guess it shows I'm technically employable? Felt good after not hearing back on the last 50 applications I've sent out.

I had a recruiter realize that I am trans and bump their planned offer to the max to help me pay for transition, so ymmv.

Admittedly, I don't apply for the as high level positions as you, this is just an engineer 4 position, but its a sign things are getting better here for us.

It's annoying. I'm 66 applications into my job hunt. 42 no response, 20 rejections, 1 that gave me (very poorly written) homework and then rejected me.

I'm putting all my poo poo into a spreadsheet and versioning my resumes and trying to make some sense of what's working and what's not.

So far:
The exact job title doesn't seem to matter. I'm applying to a handful of related titles in varying levels of seniority, and I get roughly the same 33% rejection and 66% no response rate from all of them.

My generic resume seems to be getting slightly better over time. V3 only has a 22% rejection rate thus far, compared to the ~33% of V1 and ~38% of V2. I started up V4 yesterday and will revert to V3 if it doesn't perform as well.

Customized resumes--where I tailor it directly for the employer--haven't netted me anything special yet. I've only done a few, but they're still in the 33% rejection rate area.
I get a lower rejection rate (25% vs 37%) if I include a cover letter

The analyst in me says that what I really [i]want/i] is a new job, so I should be optimizing for "get interview" not "avoid outright rejection". Unfortunately I don't have the data points for that yet, since I haven't had an interview.

So until then, "not rejected" is the only metric I can go for, and that tells me to apply for senior positions with my latest generic resume and write a god drat cover letter.

(Yes I'm a huge nerd)

Just letting me dick around with TCP and UDP instead of ICMP alone makes me wonder what mischief I can cause with it. Led to some interesting realisations about a tool that my company mandates me using though, which could be "entertaining" down the line.

I've been being a little selective and applying to places that look like they'd have a bit more of a progressive outlook hoping for even a little bit of this. Hell, help me cover voice training and I'll be set.

I'm hoping to find somewhere that isn't immediately trashing applications as soon as they see someone who isn't a cis white male.

Only danger there is some rear end in a top hat testing it 50 times a day, then telling everyone else to run it too to see if the network is slow, thus slowing down the network, and causing complaints.

We have jperf and I haven't used it in several years. It's one of those tools that we keep around to placate angry executives when one of their rich and powerful buddies complain. But in practice, if a customer is complaining of slow speeds, we can figure out why real quick.

What's the go-to cheap wired mouse+keyboard these days? I don't mind the $16 Logitech combo; the mouse is great, but the keyboard feels pretty cheap. I'd like to find something on par with the old Dell OEM keyboards.

Maybe it's futile and I should just start getting wireless combos for people. Seems like that's where the quality is these days unless you're looking at the gamer market.

I learned before the pandemic that the Lenovo T480s not only covers the camera, but disconnects it electrically as well. Like, Windows actually does say there is no camera. *That* was an HR person.
I've also had people put the add-on shutters on the newer Dells. That already have a built-in one. That said, that model had a little fingernail groove to move the slider on the face rather than a knurled bit at the top of the frame, so less obvious. Still...

I did it on Monday in a team meeting. Colleages took the piss out of me for being shy, I went "oh, hey, my webcam isn't working. Hrm..." and popped open control panel before I realised I had cleaned my screen on Sunday night and knocked the slider over.

I use the Logitech wireless M325's and the wired K120 keyboards for deployments here. For some reason in our building wireless mice work fine, but wireless keyboards intermittently have a half-second to several second delay between pressing a key and the letter appearing on the screen. This annoys my users, so every attempt to deploy a wireless keyboard has failed.
