To be fair Clair de Lune is pulling a lot of weight here for me since I'm a sucker for emotional music cues. And the back to back imagery of Godzilla firing into the sky followed by Mothra unfurling her wings hits hard with the music.

But yeah, I think this trailer is exactly why I was so disappointed in that movie. It felt kind of like a bait and switch.

All I got from that trailer is that an elf lady is "fighting." who is she fighting? why is she fighting? who even is she? Casual tv watchers who saw LOTR 20 years ago aren't going to know the name Galadriel and remember that was Cate Blanchett in the movies. Terrible ad campaign for this huge budget show.

I get the feeling that they expect it to be a hit by birthright due to name recognition alone. Like "It's Lord of the Rings, you turbonerds!" while they sit back and watch the money and ratings roll in.

The word going around King of Monsters during production was that the director didn't like to cut, he would just do what are called "rolling resets", where the camera keeps rolling and they redo the takes over and over with no rehearsals and long pauses between action. Editorial would get 8-9 hours of dailies a day, which is the kiss of death.

Hell, they might be right, but it's a weird gamble to take. Why not make the ads more exciting and evocative of the movies? They apparently have all the money in the world to spend on this. It makes me worried they don't actually have a very compelling story (aren't they making up a bunch of stuff to fill in gaps?) and are trying to paper over it with just a series of vaguely pretty visuals.

Is it even known what is the show based on? We know it’s not Silmarillion. Did they find secret JRRT notes like Brian Herbert did for his magnum opus “Dune 7: the spice of life”?

I'd expect it to be material pulled from Silmarillion for sure since a not insignificant chunk of it deals with the rings of power. I imagine there's additional material in his "Unfinished Tales" and 12 volume History of Middle Earth that Christopher Tolkien cobbled together from his father's copious notes. Maybe even some from the notes that didn't make the cut to be published posthumously.

But like, isn't the deal like they don't even have the rights to that stuff, just the appendices from LotR and the Hobbit or something?
I'm wondering if some legal nerd is gonna be watching with pen and paper to make sure they don't mention something from stuff they can't reference.

It's been decades since I last tried, but I think approaching it as a religious text like the Bible or something along those lines made it easier to read.

I loving loved this trailer back in 1998. And then the movie came out. And there isn't a "yikes" in the world big enough for my reaction to that movie.

Even now the trailer kind of gets me pumped (except the record scratch) and I know the movie is absolute poo poo!

The actual quote is something like "we have the three books, the appendices and the hobbit" and literally nothing else. Which means this series is made from Appendix B which is an actual history timeline. A is just a list of kings and C to F are charts and translation notes. Good luck to them.

Those are the adaptation rights they have free reign to use however they like, but they are also allowed to use elements of The Silmarillion and other sources in consultation with the Tolkien estate.

How much the estate let them use hasn’t been specified, but it sounded like if the estate liked the adapted take on a portion they could have it, but if they disagreed with choices the show runners had to either rework that segment or invent something new to take it’s place.

I’m reading into the very coy way it was described, but it’s not accurate to say they were limited to the appendices.

What I’m really curious to know is how much Embracer paid for their acquisition. After Amazon paid so much for so little, the idea of a budget game company getting Carte Blanche a few years later is amusing.

The full length Judge Dredd 1995 trailer got me back in the day. I'd rented a movie from the video shop and the trailer was on before it, and I had to rewind the tape to watch it again because holy poo poo there's a Judge Dredd movie coming out and it looks awesome. Aaaand then I saw the film. All of Mega City One reduced to two streets and an alleyway.

Wish I could say I enjoyed the Karl Urban Dredd movie everyone else loved, but that was just every generic action movie but with an in-world justification for all the excessive slow-mo. It was competently made, but it's still not Judge Dredd. The problem is everyone keeps trying to make an action movie out of a source material that was actually a black comedy. One day, one day...

The poster child for this thread has to be the two musicial trailers for the bad Suicide Squad movie. It was fun and exciting and I kept wishing someone would make THAT movie. Then James Gunn basically did. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn deserved that do-over.
