They could have at least had some simmer with Ed's conflict over the Father being a drat Rusky to work out but they just kill the guy off so that ends up going nowhere.

This was probably a very cynical move to cut off the option of aborting the pregnancy, to get everyone, especially the audience, invested in miracle space baby and to echo the Cold War orphan themes already going on.

how grim would it be for Kelly to have missed that airlock and just floated out to space forever

the show has a way of taking nearly impossible feats that no one in real life could ever do (Ellen's catch, Danny fixing Polaris), and making it a sure thing because the consequences of failure would be worse than Danny's plotline

and nothing is allowed to be worse than Danny's plotline

Honestly, the “baby launch” sequence has a lot of 70’s Men’s Movement myth themes in it. The Wounded Father uses his prowess to help usher the Daughter across the metaphorical threshold of Womanhood. The Wounded Father knows he can only take the Daughter to the edge of that threshold, she must make that transition under her own power. The Daughter propels herself from the Wounded Father and initiates herself into the larger world.

Having already shown the wisdom of consulting the Goddess (Molly’s advice about relying on the horizon), the Wounded Father has gained a boon that allowed him to survive his travail and become the Restored Father.

Then immediately finds out his ex wife just got blowed up.

When Apollo 24 did it's unscheduled burn and hurtled off towards deep space I did legit think at first that they were just giving those characters a super grim ending. No tracking of where they had exactly gone, no communications, no idea if Deke and Ellen survived the initial burn, just gone forever.

"Colonizing Mars, that is within the 30-year future of our real time. But what do you do beyond that? Where do you go from there? That is a much more unknown space, and how do you continue moving on there but keeping this very grounded baseline tone of this show? Oh my God, I can’t loving wait. It’s so good."

"Playing old is one of the most difficult things you can do as an actor, so it’s a super exciting challenge. Makeup and all that comes into play, but I need to do a physical transformation for this, so I’m trying to get as skinny as possible. I’ve lost 20 pounds, ruined my summer [laughs]."

The actor can play Ed's grandson in 2003. BCS had a ~50y old Aaron Paul play a 20y old and it worked. Gordo's second failchild is clearly over 40 and playing a 20y old. gently caress it, nobody cares anymore

Oof, it's been years. I don't remember it coming up at all, IIRC the first mission was American/Russian and then the other major players were the UN and some corporations?

I dunno, obviously China wasn't in the 90s what it is today, but it should've been clear it will be a major player.

I think KSR is just your typical Cold War gen kind of guy who was fixated on the Russia/America dynamic for anything space-related. He probably should've been a bit more forward-thinking about China's inevitable rise as a major power in space exploration, though, especially considering that other sci-fi writers around that time and earlier were able to do so - Arthur C. Clarke, for example (a Chinese mission to Europa is a major plot point in the book version of 2010, which came out a good 10 years before Red Mars).

Yeah, I assumed he didn't anticipate China's rise on the world stage. The country was already on the up when KSR wrote the book but the economy really took off around the mid to late 90s. It's been a while but I recall Japan and the Saudis being major players in the trilogy.

Finally finished the show so can finish this thread.

I'm 90% certain that Sergei is living in Philip and Elizabeth Jennings house. If so, nice hat tip. (e: went back and looked, it was not, not sure what I was thinking)

For those wishing for more of a time skip, I don't think you can rule that out yet. They absolutely could be showing a quick stop at 2003 to show where Margot went and we can infer she was instrumental in advancing their program to get hypersonic neon thrusters or whatever that takes you to Europa.

I saw someone mention that the creators intend to have the show end far off in the future? Mind sharing a citation? I went into this show blind a little over a month ago and have no outside context.

Sure! Roger Moore, the series creator, has done a few interviews where he has talked about how he wants the show to go past our current year - although to my knowledge he hasn’t specifically dropped a “this show is building up to a Star Trek utopia” quote. This is from an interview he did after season 2 was released:

Roger Moore posted:

… There was generally a seven-year arc of structure that we pitched originally. Each season would go roughly 10 years into the future. So, you catch up to the modern-day and go a little bit into the future. That said, these things are changeable and organic. We approach each season fresh, even though we have a big framework of what the next season’s supposed to be. We always start at the beginning and say, okay this is what we talked about two years ago, let’s make sure this still holds up. Is this still where we want to go?

So you could come to a point where you decide to end the show at a certain point. Or you can decide that the show is going gangbusters and you go past the endpoint. Everything is still on the table. But yeah, the plan was to go into the future to catch up, to see what is the world we would live in today. How would that be different [in this timeline]? That’s one of the tantalizing ideas of the series. And then what would go beyond that. I think that is still the ambition of what we're trying to do.

I don't think it was here that I picked up a recommendation for Riding Rockets book: https://www.amazon.com/Riding-Rocke...ps%2C186&sr=8-1

It's a memoir by a Shuttle astronaut, pretty easy and entertaining read. Obviously it's all real poo poo, but the fun parallel with the show was the astronaut selection process. Basically the management was really terrible and provided no transparency or criteria for who will be assigned to what mission and when. So you'd have dozens of astronauts trying to guess what they need to and how in order to be selected with zero feedback, for years on end, until a crew will be called to the office without with no notice and everyone else watched them go to a different building from their offices.

I don't think any pilots/commanders were removed from a mission (at least until that point) but one mission specialist was bumped from his original flight because a senator wanted to go up instead. Poor guy was moved to the STS-51-L mission on the Challenger.
