1 million per year to Solomon Island officials doesn't seem to be a lot of money. If Solomon Island has law that make foreign donation to the government legal then there is no problem, how the money is distributed is not PRC's concern.

Ultimately the point is this: there are many many small islands on the Pacific, some will take the US side and some will take the China's side, some will jump back and fore for maximum benefit. Outside of pure cash for military base (the traditional way), China has extra cards to play, because China is specialized in helping poor country to develop and grow. An underdeveloped island country needs ports, modern facilities, power and water utilities, human connectivities (road and rail). China has a full menu that can offer all of that. Interestingly the US and her "allies" gave up all of those capacity a long time ago. It's almost as if the developed countries doesn't want to help the rest of the world develop faster.

And ironically this only really helps the rich sleep at night. They'd be fine no matter what, but then they might have to actually think every once in a while in exchange for the near unbelievable bounty that a fully and properly developed world would provide so they refuse to do so out of nothing but childish fear, willingly destroying anything and everything to prevent even mild uncertainty in their future.

Thankfully human fear only causes those ruled by it to weaken in power, because for all that it can claw into people's hearts it cannot actually build anything. Siding with fascists is only a move in desperation to keep the existing power relations, and cannot result in them adapting to a new age. They will sooner return to their caves than suddenly become able to compete with China and other socialist countries.

It’s just funny that Taiwan was bribing Solomon island pols and no one cares until China decided to continue the practice as a curtesy. Suddenly it’s “corruption” that the vampire west cares about

And the AP meanders about it because they have to

Im guessing China might already have intelligence/counter intelligence people in the island already in the embassy sifting through any potential threats.

And honestly every country that decides that chinese alignment is more favorable for them than the constant cycle of US coups probably ought to have a chinese base in the country to act as a counter weight against a potential coup

I guess I don't really know much about the Solomon Islands but I would assume that a state that aligned itself with Taiwan over China for so long might not be cooperative with Chinese intelligence so it would have to be secret. Otoh they might be actively hostile to Americans so who knows

Yeah tropical islands can feed a lot of people. Java island has 145 million. Over 1200 people per km². Twice the density of Taiwan.

BTW, Taiwan's density is 657 per km², twice that of Sri Lanka and 3 times more than Hainan island. Anyone got an explanation?

Uhhh.. the US constantly tries to disguise its oligarchic fascism as “democracy” — domestically and abroad.

“Democracy” is a system of government literally invented by the bourgeoise (after they overthrew the feudalistic aristocracy) in order for capital to exploit and enslave labor with the latter’s consent. It really is the most efficient form of bourgeois/capital control over labor ever achieved lmao owned
