Len Enders: https://www.youtube.com/c/LenEnders. A guy who grew up in the '70s and '80s sharing old home videos and memories, mostly (but not exclusively) from his late '80s high school years. He's an Xer who's about 14 years older than I am, so not a lot of our cultural experiences are that alike but his videos are really entertaining and interesting.

My favorite video he's done is a video about the actual biblical apocalypse, he breaks it down in such a way it makes it very clear that its about Rome and is pretty much just whomever wrote it's fantasy about Rome being squished.

world war 2 week by week. Exactly what it says on the tin. I like his communication style. Every so often there's a more in depth chapter, for midway and pearl harbor comes to mind. While he sticks more or less strictly to military matters, there's a side channel 'war against humanity' that goes into the nitty gritty of the atrocities. Probably for the best -- can learn about battle of the bulge without having to hear about the liquidation of the warsaw ghetto.

After reading through 10 pages here are some that I have no seen, there should be something for everyone:

Alantutorial - Worth watch from the beginning to experience the true power of this. Alan tries to explain how to do basic things but poo poo gets weird. It's old internet but still as great as it was when it first came out

Cool Dudes Walking Club - British Comedian, Marek Larwood goes on country walks spotting things and generally making gently funny videos.

Destination Adventure - Chill Canadian dude explores wilderness and abandoned things, he seems very nice!

Geowizard - He aims to walk in straight lines across countries, he also plays Geo Guesser a lot.

Hell On Earth - 3 English reprobates explore abandoned buildings, mines etc. The fun in this one is that they just take the piss out of one another constantly. One of the truer representations of being British you will see.

Nardwuar - I can't believe no one has mentioned this channel yet, one of the single best interviewers of musicians on the planet. His ability to spin out people with stuff he has found about them is nothing short of staggering.

New Zealand Today - The intrepid Guy Williams gets to the bottom of New Zealand's hottest stories, such as "Who stole Cilla's homemade coffin" and "Hunt for the Invercargill Pool Pooper". It's really funny.

Sampson Boat Co. - This is the one I came to post. A dude buys the carcass of a 100 year old America cup yacht and painstakingly restores it. Very chill and if you are into your joinery and woodwork, it's heaven.

Wavy Boats Like watching dumb people gently caress up expensive boats, I do! This channel basically films people going in and out of a couple of Miami's inlets. Surprisingly addictive.

Have some other small channels who are generally always happy and enthusiastic:

https://youtube.com/c/JeffHorchoff
Beekeeper who is part of a monastery in Lousiana, USA. Mostly spends time removing hives from people's properties but also does large scale honey extractions from comb and wax which is interesting.
Always with a "Praise Jesus" whenever he finds the queen but that's about as religious as he gets on videos. Just a constantly enthusiastic, positive and happy fella.

https://youtube.com/c/SlothyVlogs
Chap who goes around funfairs and ventures to other small scale theme/holiday parks mostly around the South Coast of the UK with family or his various friends to try out the rides. Does POV when on the rides. Friendly enough with the various funfair companies that you sometimes get some behind the scenes bits. Includes light British banter between his friends.

https://youtube.com/c/mrbarrylewis
A bit larger in subscribers as nearing a million, Barry presents a humerous UK amateur cooking channel from his family kitchen trying out various things. Not a step-by-step recipe show, he just gets on with it without supplying measurements (can be found on his website)
Frequent videos are scaling up making something 10x+ larger in scale, testing kitchen gadgets, trying tik-tok "cooking hacks", reviewing products, and just anything crazy/interesting in the kitchen that's worth a go making.
What I like is he is no-bs where if it works or fails it's genuinely presented as such. His family often gets involved but doesnt detract or feel forced like other family inclusions in youtube channels.

https://youtube.com/c/AIGamesSeries
All in the title, does good voice over documentaries bout how the AI works in specific video games. From the old to the new, it's pretty informative about how it's cobbled together to work and pretty interesting in the older games like Doom.

https://youtube.com/c/MarcelVos
If you like the original RollerCoaster Tycoon then this guy is detailing all the things you never knew or thought about trying in game. From creating length of rides that put going on Mr Bones Wild Ride a blessing (45 real life years), the minute details about the included rides, glitches, completing scenarios with one ride. They are short and good.

This feels like cheating because they're actually TV shows, but they're free and may be entertaining to watch for some so ehhhhhhhh

The first one is Forensic Files (aka Medical Detectives aka Mystery Detectives), which has all of its seasons that I know of for free:

https://www.youtube.com/c/FilmRiseTrueCrime

It's actually the channel of the company that makes them and they have a bunch of other true crime stuff, but I can't vouch for them. I do find Forensic Files to be really fascinating, though. Like the killer will wear gloves so as to not leave fingerprints, pick up the shell casings and bury the murder weapon 12 feet into the ground, but because he accidentally farted at the crime scene, forensic experts will find out what he ate and then get a DNA sample off of his steak knife or something ridiculous like that. Granted when you read up on the actual case, it will usually not be quite the slam dunk that they make it out to be, but the best episodes are unusually riveting. The narrator seems a little excitable though. One episode that I found interesting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMhjMIJYJeM

The second one is Mayday: Air Disaster:

https://www.youtube.com/c/MaydayAirDisaster

As you probably guessed from the rather dramatic title, this is about airline crashes and other incidents and what caused them. Mind you, I'm a sucker for disaster shows with sensational titles like SECONDS FROM DISASTER and COUNTDOWN TO CATASTROPHE. Anyways, they don't have as many free episodes as FilmRise, but they're nevertheless well done and worth watching. One episode that I found interesting:

That reminds me, a great channel someone mentioned on some thread here a couple years ago is The Flight Channel

Not dramatic at all, I mean unless the actual event was. It’s literally just Flight Simulator recreations of various aerospace incidents, major and minor, fatal and non-fatal. Along with captions telling exactly what was happening at each stage. Recently began inserting cockpit audio into vids as well to add to immersion

Holy poo poo, I watched every video on that channel last night, and man, pilot error normally is "something happened and they weren't trained for it or were unfamiliar with something" but rarely is pilot error just the pilots being as stupid as possible. Like listening to that flight recorder of the last few minutes is horrifying because just know that kid knew he killed everyone when it was only partially his fault.

The flight 800 one was interesting too, and it explains why there was the conspiracy theory that the navy shot it down based on people saying they saw a missile trail going up, it was the noseless plane shooting up before crashing down. That would have been horrifying for the passengers; the cabin would have been full of fire and the plane is just fliying upwards and upwards until it can't anymore and plunging down.

A similar channel is Maritime Horrors, which does similar things for nautical disasters
https://www.youtube.com/c/MaritimeHorrors

I had to go back and check if i had posted this earlier. The one on the Edmund Fitzgerald was really intersting because its something I've heard about many times, but never an explanation of what actually happened other than it sunk. Well, that was because no one really knows why it sunk.

Seconding this. I followed Indy Neidell from his original series, The Great War. WW2 doesn’t have the same production team (so no Flo) but it’s essentially the same brains behind the operation. I feel that COVID has dampened some of the ambition that Indy and Spartacus had when they were kicking things off, but maybe things will pick back up for the remainder of the series. I haven’t watched the Pearl Harbor episodes (it’s a lot to take in and I don’t have the spare time for it) but the Midway episodes were exciting to watch.

There are other formats they do in addition to the heavy-hitting War Against Humanity, such as On the Homefront, hosted by Sparty’s daughter Anna, which covers different aspects of civilian life during the war; and Spies & Ties, hosted by Sparty’s wife (and the channel’s creative director) Astrid, which covers the clandestine activities of the period, including a two-part look at Operation Mincemeat, which was instrumental in diverting Axis attention away from the invasion of Sicily.

I had no idea that it was so full of nepotism. Also how old is Spartacus if Anna is his daughter?

Seriously, its great, and it doesn't hold back in just how horrific the war is. The War Against Humanity episodes do not gloss over the bad poo poo the allies did, but its a great series to see that yes, the allies did bad stuff, but holy poo poo its not nearly on the level of the Nazis or the Japanese.

I'm excited to see their D-Day Coverage next year, as they're able to travel to Normandy.

Some of it is just down to Youtube being a nightmare hellhole. 99% of people are never going to watch a bland Channel Update Video but Youtube just loves to shove metrics and numbers in your face no matter what. So the adaptation some have developed is to simply trick more people into watching their boring status update poo poo.

Creating disasters and running away from them since 1981.
Historia Civilis is a wonderful channel mainly about the buildup to Caesar's civil war and the late Roman republic. However, he mixes in random topics about the bronze age collapse, the Congress of Vienna, and "Can animals commit crimes?".

The nice thing about it is that it doesn't get bogged down with overly dramatic language and graphics - hell, all the people are represented by color squares with clip art level quality. But what elevates it above other documentaries is the excellent writing and great pacing while still explaining complex political situations.

His earlier stuff is a bit weak and suffers from poor audio quality, but his content, and his recording setup, get better pretty quickly.
