nostalgia for the 90's and 2000's is nostalgia for, like, not having to deal with the stress of living in the 2020's and coping with the fact you'll never have a house and safety in the way you were when you were a kid

im almost done with house of cards and am struck at how the uk under the main characters leadership is explicitly a tory hellhole that probably doesnt even qualify as an actual democracy anymore does the us version do anything like this im guessing not but the political agendas are so tightly woven into the uk version im having trouble processing how netflix could remove them but somehow make the show longer

I was browsing through my youtube subscription list tonight for old channels and spent a few hours trying to remember one channel I think might have been the first channel I ever subscribed to. It took ages because the name was on the tip of my tongue and all I could remember is it had "ookers" in it, and I vaguely recalled them getting some kind of tv development deal. For whatever reason virtually every "top youtuber" by year list only went as far back as 2010. Anyway it turns out the reason I couldn't find it is because they deleted the channel, but the youtuber was Brookers - the most subscribed Youtuber of 2006 with a whopping 15000ish subscribers. The development deal was with Carson Daly's production company, and its especially impressive because all her videos were essentially what would these days be considered shitposts edited in Windows Movie Maker. It's kind of charming now just because its so uncynically untethered from any concept of genre, branding or intent for channel growth. Google didn't even buy Youtube until the end of that year, and even then Google had only entered the public share market like 18 months earlier. its a really interesting element in the uk version reminds me a lot of hamlet of all things specifically the fortinbras subplot which emphasizes that all the petty dysfunctional bullshit in the story is making it impossible for anyone to mobilize against an actual existential threat against the entire kingdom just thinking about how obama apparently loved the us version of house of cards and how its hard to imagine that being the case if the show had any materialist elements like that and its kind of sounding like nope it doesnt also the presidents actions dont seem to matter that much anyway as far as the overall state of the country goes which sounds pretty in line with obamas ethos

ordinarily I don't countenance discussion of Christmas movies outside of December, but since we're on the subject... the best Christmas movie is a Charlie Brown Christmas and it's not even close. no other Christmas movie matches its moodiness. all of the children get together at the end to rebuild the Christmas tree so yeah it's socialist too
