Oh, fair.

What’s the romanticized generational outlook? Like if the 90’s were cynical, what do these films say people were like in the 2000’s?

nostalgia for the 90's and 2000's is nostalgia for, like, not having to deal with the stress of living in the 2020's and coping with the fact you'll never have a house and safety in the way you were when you were a kid

im almost done with house of cards and am struck at how the uk under the main characters leadership is explicitly a tory hellhole that probably doesnt even qualify as an actual democracy anymore

does the us version do anything like this im guessing not but the political agendas are so tightly woven into the uk version im having trouble processing how netflix could remove them but somehow make the show longer

iirc in netflix house of cards, frank underwood is a southern democrat (?) and when he becomes president he pushes a platform of entitlement reform and privatizing social security in favor of a nationwide jobs program or something

That’s what I’m saying, but maybe it’s difficult to recapture that sentiment for the 90’s and 2000’s? Christmas 2001 is out because everyone was still talking about 9/11, Christmas 2002 Henry Kissinger stepped down as the chairman of a panel investigating the September 11 attacks, citing conflict of interest with his clients, Christmas 2003 the news was entirely about the US capturing Saddam etc.

Nostalgia is never "realistic", that's the point. You look back and only remember the good stuff which is a lot easier to do when you didn't actually have to live through it.

I was browsing through my youtube subscription list tonight for old channels and spent a few hours trying to remember one channel I think might have been the first channel I ever subscribed to. It took ages because the name was on the tip of my tongue and all I could remember is it had "ookers" in it, and I vaguely recalled them getting some kind of tv development deal. For whatever reason virtually every "top youtuber" by year list only went as far back as 2010.

Anyway it turns out the reason I couldn't find it is because they deleted the channel, but the youtuber was Brookers - the most subscribed Youtuber of 2006 with a whopping 15000ish subscribers. The development deal was with Carson Daly's production company, and its especially impressive because all her videos were essentially what would these days be considered shitposts edited in Windows Movie Maker. It's kind of charming now just because its so uncynically untethered from any concept of genre, branding or intent for channel growth. Google didn't even buy Youtube until the end of that year, and even then Google had only entered the public share market like 18 months earlier.

is this presented as good bad or neutral this isnt that different from the stated policies in the uk version it only takes on sinister undertones whenever we get scenes in public spaces that make it clear the social order is on the brink of collapse and that the only real difference between their world and ours is the person whos in charge

It's Discovery Zone and Arcades at Malls. That's it.

as i recall it seems vaguely negative but they really don't delve much into it. in one episode frank underwood, frustrated by gridlock in congress, decides to fund his jobs program by declaring unemployment a national emergency and raiding FEMA funds for it (which, like, how much FEMA funding is there anyway), but then gets nervous because a hurricane is approaching the gulf that might require FEMA action, but then at the last second it doesn't make landfall. suitably chastened, he decides not to raid FEMA and then i think it's never mentioned again

its a really interesting element in the uk version reminds me a lot of hamlet of all things specifically the fortinbras subplot which emphasizes that all the petty dysfunctional bullshit in the story is making it impossible for anyone to mobilize against an actual existential threat against the entire kingdom

just thinking about how obama apparently loved the us version of house of cards and how its hard to imagine that being the case if the show had any materialist elements like that and its kind of sounding like nope it doesnt also the presidents actions dont seem to matter that much anyway as far as the overall state of the country goes which sounds pretty in line with obamas ethos

Boomers were fake nostalgic for being teenagers in the 50's so it checks out that they would also be fake Nostalgic for being children in the 40's. This also explains the popularity of Charlie Brown and Lil Rascals with them.

What I like to do to deal with existential dread, instead of joining a church, is organize all my movies and mp3 files and make sure I've got good metadata for everything. Maybe ensure my roms match the current redump dats or manually download box art for stuff that doesn't auto-download correctly.

I enjoyed the nostalgia in Pen15. Today I talked trapper keepers with some people because the inventor died. But if they started trying to shovel that stuff at me the way they have with boomers I'd check out.

ordinarily I don't countenance discussion of Christmas movies outside of December, but since we're on the subject...

the best Christmas movie is a Charlie Brown Christmas and it's not even close. no other Christmas movie matches its moodiness. all of the children get together at the end to rebuild the Christmas tree so yeah it's socialist too

I guess all those beloved Xmas songs written by Jews got to go then.

I always look forward to the stupid Chanukah movie hallmark releases every year. only time I watch a romcom. it’s funny because it’s a bunch of lonely adults talking about it like Xmas and there are barely any kids…

I was saying in another thread it’s amazing that all of that was stamped out in a generation. I was watching some Twilight Zone episodes and it was moving how many of those ideals were still present.

I'm annoyed by the ubiquity of Christmas but outside of poo poo like that yeah Chanukah is a bogus holiday

It just happens to be the one closest in time to Christmas so it got built up into the Jewish Christmas (it isn't) (Passover might be the closest cultural equivalent??? No gift exchange tho)

Chanukah didn't have a tradition of gift exchange either until it suddenly had to so American Jewish parents didn't have to deal with sobbing four-year-olds whose goyishe friends all got shiny new toys every winter

when Jews were in Babylon they adopted the sabbath and liked it so much they started to do it every week instead of every month. maybe if they embraced Christmas the same way we'd get a few more holidays every year.
