When did the demonization of public defenders in tv and movies start? Did law and order play a big part in that?

AnimeIsTrash posted:When did the demonization of public defenders in tv and movies start? Did law and order play a big part in that? defense lawyers have been the butt of a joke for awhile. the 'ambulance chaser' has been a stereotype since before L&O. if i had to guess it was during the 80s reagan era where it really took off specifically public defenders i actually don't know. their traits of being stupid, unprepared, underpaid and uncaring seem pretty solidified in 90s media but i couldn't tell you where that comes from. maybe still more 'starve the beast' politics that denied funding, or maybe some publicized case where they were defending a particularly odious client

i think the frivolous lawsuits memes of the eighties and nineties did most of the heavy lifting in terms of smearing lawyers as a profession in general the practice in the late nineties was much worse for defense lawyers than law and order just because they were the actual main characters so they were knowingly rather than ambiguously defending evil clients

i don't know how socialist it is per se but christmas evil is about a toy factory worker who goes on a killing spree because he gets pissed off at the waste & artifice of christmas and how no one really lives up to its ideals even as they're ostensibly observing its spirit, oh also he watches his mom gently caress santa when he's a kid, with an ending scene that i guarantee you would not predict in a 100 years. anyway its very cspam, 5 stars

loquacius posted:I mean tbf public defenders and litigators aren't the same kind of lawyer This is true but not all litigators are the ambulance chaser types. Often times class litigation can be a powerful tool for workers to demand compensation from employers, in fact sometimes it’s the only (lawful, heh) tool.

Some Guy TT posted:slipping jimmy was a public defender all the time and hes based on the same archetype There was a good tweet thread from some public defender who talked about it. The exact wording was way better than I can do but the premise was that the system is designed to screw over the defendant, and you have to be like Jimmy to win against it.

In the early seasons you can see Kim try to take on the system completely straightlaced and getting crushed by it.

I think this thread is mixing up Public Defender and Defense Attorney because they aren’t synonyms and have different cliches. The former is shown to be incompetent, probably suffers from male pattern baldness, just wants whatever will end the trial quickest so they can go home and doesn’t care about his client. The later is “high powered” and is cacklingly evil as they work against our brave selfless hero cops to get off the smug evil perp using some insidious lie like “due process”.

The antagonist is a mean old nun so theoretically it's an anti clerical work. Much more progressive than it's sequel, where municipal waste workers are victimized.

The best low budget slashers barely even need their gore and killing, just the general atmosphere of looming dread and hopelessness is enough.

"Don't Open 'Til Christmas" is also good, from the same time. Greasy, gaudy 80s Britain, with Caroline Munro wrapped up in a slinky red dress as a club singer.
