So I guess it's not important which person got stabbed here or who did the stabbing. Just... someone nearly runs over someone else and then a stabbing materializes

I saw a whole line of cars backed up in a parking lot behind one of these people. Her husband had run in to pick up a burrito.

I live a block uphill from a busy commercial street and on Saturdays I like to stop and admire the rows of cars that are either just parked in the road with their hazard lights on or are stopped and waiting in the road indefinitely for a parking space to open up.

The overall average cost to own and operate a new car in 2022 is $10,728.

gig economy poo poo has super hypernormalized this this past 7 years. downtown shattuck-university here is basically a whole lane that's just hazard-light double parked cars, including in all the bus stops. there's actually a city garage a block or two over that almost no one uses or regular diners/show-goers use so it's pretty much just dozens of gig cars

the slides are pretty interesting. tabulates that electrics are the most 'expensive' on the back of their rapid deprecation. i wish someone out there would make an electric econobox, theyre all so fancy. kinda defeats the purpose imo. also the average msrp for a car is 33 grand. wild.

What do you mean? Depreciation is just the cost in that table that represents the actual price of the car.

If you keep the car longer than 5 years or if you buy a used car that cost calculation isn't accurate, but if you're looking at the cost of owning a new car (which is specifically what it's calculating), then it's absolutely necessary to factor depreciation in because the actual price of the car (and loss of its value) is going to be the single biggest cost.

This is definitely true, and my first reaction was "that's insanely dumb but maybe it's what americans do" but when you think about the fact that the point is specifically to quantify the cost of a new car, that may not even be what it's saying. It's still applicable even if you do in fact keep the car after 5 years because in having made the choice to initially buy it new rather than used you're still eating the cost of the depreciation for the first five years, so in a way this isn't a cost you avoid by buying a new car and keeping it longer, it's a cost you avoid buy buying a used car (or better yet not buying a car).

Of course, in reality obviously not all americans buy new cars since there is plenty of demand for used cars, but it does seem like there are also lots of people who do buy new cars and then trade them in every few years for some insane reason.

Awhile back I tried that show, listened to the most recently released episode. It turned out to be an interview with a fat acceptance activist. The main thrust of the episode was that we need to do away with the harmful stereotype that cycling is a good way to lose weight. They also talked about how "obese" is a slur and how "morbidly obese" makes no sense as a diagnosis because how can someone be morbidly obese if they're still alive?

It was honestly almost nostalgic, I hadn't heard fat acceptance mentioned since the Obama administration.

i think it's more intuitive when you talk about how much something costs to keep it to out of pocket costs (like fuel/insurance/registration etc). like $800 in unrealized losses due to depreciation isn't a cost if you don't sell the car, it's not money out of your wallet.

but buying the car IS an out of pocket cost, if anything they are being generous by amortizing it and assuming you will get some of it back
