I agree with where you are coming from and I could see myself handling the situation just like you did. Saying that, when something like that is uncovered involving two children, you have to stop and understand that you now have something radioactive. You might be breaking laws by deleting it or by not disclosing it. This is where you reach out to your local authorities (which is the last thing I would ever advise to do because ACAB), because the situation might blow back on someone later on. You discover, you disclose, and you make it someone else's problem who is paid to have it be there problem. Deleting and moving on leads to poo poo. What if someone in the need to know goes back and recovers the data and gets caught with it? What if someone tells someone else what happened and that person miscommunicates events to the authorities after the fact? Who wants to answer those questions then? Protect yourself. The lawyer had spent time on the phone with the local DA and other required reporters. The decision to delete wasn't something I was in the loop for but it was signed off by people with the appropriate authority. Nor did I do the actual deletion. My role was just say what the school's lawyer said but with greater color and emphasis. All of which I have documentation for. Along with copies in different locations, including digital. As part of my job, I deal with the aftermath of crime a lot. My processes for things have been vetted by my lawyers to make sure that I stay within the law as much as possible. Somewhat because I prefer not to be sued or arrested but mostly because I don't want to have to tell someone that the reason they won't get justice was me loving up. And even at the periphery of poo poo show, I will make sure that not only is my rear end covered, and the correct actions are taken.

Yea, my answer in that situation would always be "What did the lawyers say?", then calling said lawyer to get verbal confirmation. Then emailing the lawyer to recap the discussion. My rear end would be covered better than the kids in the video

So here's the fun (horrible) scenario - client with contract who turns out is riding the line of what is/isn't CP (calls them naturalist videos), has been charged by police in the past and beat the charges in court. Want to see your lawyer sweat under pressure? Courts already defined it as not CP (even though it blatently was), so you can't use that as an out to cancel the contracts. The silver lining: he finally stepped over the line publicly, cops got to charge him, and couldn't believe it when they found he was running a real store and even accepted credit cards and got his international client list with real names & delivery addresses because the customers thought he found the golden loophole.

I hate that this reminded me of the pee hole at a former job. For those of you who don’t recall: I worked at a local business whose servers were in a dank, damp room in the basement. There was a drain in the floor. The owner would go in and pee in the drain instead of walking upstairs to the bathroom.

Well, he couldn't make it show his face because he was in jail, also he owned the business. Yes, it was a legitimate business selling CP like content (DVDs, etc). Cops couldn't believe how brazen he became because he could/would/did sue the poo poo out of them for harassment so they kept away until he clearly crossed the line.

The 2nd floor of our main DC is collapsing, does that count? We're 2 years into the repair and still a ways to go. You're not allowed in without pre-approval from management, a hard hat and full hi-vis, you do your job and you get the gently caress out. ...this is the 2nd time this is happening in the history of this company. e: the best part is that my FIL was a commercial electrician, and got hired to do the electric for the building the first time.
