Darchangel posted:One guy broke his AutoX car, so rented a Malibu (late '90s, early '00 at the time), I think it was, and used that just for fun. The body roll was hilarious. Some groups might not let you run a tall vehicle out of rollover concerns though. Barely related, but I was behind a Regal on my way out of work yesterday (W body, so anywhere from 97-04?). There's a long curve coming out of the property that everybody hauls rear end on, and the body roll on that thing was hilarious. It looked like it wanted to capsize. I know that's larger than a Malibu, but that's not the point. I was able to go around him mid-curve comfortably. My mother had a W body Intrigue, and I remember it handling.... decent. Not great, but I don't remember it ever feeling like it was going to roll onto its side. But it was also only a couple of years old at the time.

Remember, it's a car commercial, and they loving hate showing any other cars, or anything that implies cars are a pain in the arse. Wide, smooth city streets with just you cruising smoothly from coffee shop to picking up the kids. Free flowing highways. In this case they actually need other cars to demonstrate the feature, but better not show them too close, squeezing your SUV in amongst a sea of other SUV's is a breeze, especially with Ford's new Autopark!

Aren't Buick Regals always just old man couch cars? I got one as a rental to drive from Denver-LA in 2001 and it felt like I was driving a waterbed. Thing had body roll on the straights

Buick was selling two different models based on the W platform back then, the Regal was actually positioned as the sportier of the two. The other being the Century.

LOL why do the doors fly open? I assume they re-lock after it catches on fire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAIxdwOFnQk In the old days, when motor industry CEOs had to sell books to get "likes" from adoring MBAs and other sycophants, cars at least threw you out in minor rollovers

The first gen had a swing axel rear suspension that could tuck under and lose contact while cornering. How big a problem it really was is disputed by Corvair enthusiasts. Edit: Tuck under and cause roll overs. Here’s a video where a test driver takes one out on a track to demonstrate. The tuck under does look real scary and it even lifts the opposite tire but it doesn’t roll it. Those may be much better tires than they came with though. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NI9Hq0_Mhy0 Fornax Disaster fucked around with this message at 17:12 on Aug 28, 2022 |
