In the early 1990s, I handled a claim wherein a crane was loading modular house sections into the hold of a converted Russian ammo ship (up the Delaware River in Fairless Hills, PA) for transit to (eventually) Moscow and someone wasn't paying attention to where the hard points were for strapping & the module did exactly this while suspended over the hold.

Keep in mind, these are fully-kitted out & finished with bathroom, carpeting, fixtures, wiring, etc.

All of the crew were grabbing the fixtures, carpet, windows, trims etc. as salvage.

When I used to forkfuckle on the farm it was quite an art to get the big bales of straw to slide off and land exactly where you wanted them when you slammed on the tractor brakes.

I watch a cow hoof trimmer religiously but this is the first time I've seen someone tip the cow

maybe it's different because it's a bull and they can be way more dangerous, but the dairy cows I've seen have been just straight in, feet up, get trimmed, see ya

I'm confused about how the feet get restrained. Like, I can see that they DO get restrained and at the end you can see they release - either automatically or by a control - but how do they get on?

The process CAN'T be "These hooves are too dangerous when we trim them, so let's restrain the legs, but also you have to set the restraints yourself."

Trimming the hoof uses a Very Sharp Knife, so you don't want the hoof wiggling while you trim

The hoof is not itself so deadly you can't be near it

Some animals will go sort-of catatonic when held tightly in a weird orientation, maybe that includes cows. It looks like the leg restraints rotate out of the surface and lock into place so they're probably easy to put on if the cow is limp and uncombative

I guess what threw me was that it looks like the restraints disengage on their own which stuck in my mind as meaning that they MUST engage similarly.

Considering how placidly the bull took the whole process, it makes sense that the restraints are done manually and mostly just to prevent a leg from moving 2 Fast 2 Furious while you have a sharp knife in your hand.

That's an enormous crush and likely too large for most set-ups. May be required for a bull of that size but certainly not necessary for dairy cattle. And yes, you want to restrain the hooves well because if they move on you you could very easily cut into living tissue/corium and that's a bad time for all involved.

(my "pre-vet" college classes at a mostly rancher school weren't completely pointless, maybe?)
