My current situation is like 200 per year but it’s all SIC on this plane and they’re talking about putting it on 135. I like where I go but my pay, inflation considering, stinks.

Cool video on the J58, the SR-71 engine. One of the old Pratt engineers talks shop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJrXUh0eZjw Also, any good resources out there to help with airliner identification? I can mostly tell Airbus and Boeing apart but I'm getting tired of asking my captains which one we're supposed to follow when looking at 7 different airplanes coming down the taxiway.

cigaw posted:Cool video on the J58, the SR-71 engine. One of the old Pratt engineers talks shop. This may help: https://opennav.com/airliner-identification-quiz For smaller airplanes, where the engines and wings are located makes it relatively easy to tell manufacturers apart. Engines under the wings? Embraer 175/195. If it's got rounded flight deck windows, it's an A220. Engines on the tail? Probably a CRJ, maybe an Embraer 145. For twin turboprops, if the main landing gear is on the fuselage, it's an ATR, if they're on the engine nacelles, it's a Dash 8. Telling the 737 and A319/20/21 apart is pretty easy by looking at the engines and landing gear, since the 737 nacelles are much closer to the ground, and the main gear are much shorter than the Airbus family. From the front, the 737 nacelles also have a "chipmunk cheeks" appearance, where they bulge out at the bottom sides, whereas Airbus engines are round. The 757/767 can be differentiated because the 757 looks significantly skinnier than the 767, and the 777 is big enough that it's hard to mistake for anything else. Telling the 787 and A350 apart is a bit trickier, but I use the wingtips, since the A350 wing curves up to being nearly vertical at the tip, whereas the 787 is flatter at the tip. azflyboy fucked around with this message at 08:20 on Aug 30, 2022 |

Surely 777 vs a330 is a thing? 777 has 3 pairs on each main gear, a330 has two. The 777’s wedge vs cone shaped tailcone is pretty unique too.

Cockpit windows are a pretty good tell, too. Manufacturers tend to use extremely similar windscreen/sideview layouts between models. The windows on a DC-10 are nearly the exact same shape and layout as the windows on a C-17.

330 has airbus cockpit windows and a pointier tail, and more space between the axles on the trucks on the mains, and tiny little winglets e:

Shouldn’t you not rely on winglets because they vary? Still, I think A330s are the only ones with those weird flatter ones?

If you were worried that the airlines being fucky was a US specific thing, ANA just scheduled my in-laws for a connector flight that leaves about 5 hours before they get to Tokyo. So it’s alive and well everywhere apparently. One little trick to halve your transcontinental trip time that the man doesn’t want you to know about!

The employee pic where they simply place epaulettes on your shoulder for as long as it takes to get a lovely crew photo. They accidentally put captain stripes on one guy in my class, still not sure why they even had them on hand for a new hire class.
