They are legit keys. I'm pretty sure the sellers are violating an agreement with MS by reselling the keys... but that's between them and MS. The worst that MS can do to you is revoke the key, and the evidence from the 100s of goons that have bought keys is they don't bother.

Like, the person who sold you the code told you to go to a sketchy website? Most of the time I've heard about keys not working, the sellers just get them a new code.

But if you find key resellers sketchy, and you also don't want to shell out $150 for a "legit" copy of Windows, you have a third option: just don't use a key at all. You can install & use 10 or 11 with no key. It runs all software, gets updates, and is 100% fully functional except that you can't change the desktop background.

Yeah I figure that there are so many being sold it's probably kind of a grey area. I think I'll just pick up another key then.

The Office keys I bought did get replaced with new ones, but they didn't activate online. I had to go to a website (Get CID) type in a code, then the website generated a phone activation key (which is pretty sketchy to me).

I never had to do that with the windows keys I got here.

Thing you have to realize is Microsoft made the decision years ago that selling Windows wasn't their money maker, it's to their benefit to get you on Windows 10 and 11 so they can harvest your info and sell you ads if you don't set it up right. That's why Windows 7 keys still work for 10 and I assume 11. It's not the old "We're out to get all pirates!" of the olden days. They care a lot less than they did before.

Hmmm, I bet the process with Office is different and that's why you get sent to a kinda sketchy site -- they're probably running the activation behind the scene with some master key or something that they can't give out so you can activate yourself.

Nothing like that happens when you get the Windows key, it's just the regular deal. But MS is way more protective of the Office revenue than they are Windows.

But I can't do more than guess myself, I've not interacted with key resellers for Office. The most recent time I had a need for actual real MS Office I just subscribed to O365 for a year. If it's paying work it's not much money, if it's not then LibreOffice is good enough for anything else.

In particular, selling retail codes to home users isn't their money maker. Licensing to OEMs for every personal computer sold in the world still very much is.

And the other thing that tipped the decision to be lax was that pirated, un-updated Windows installs were a massive source of botnets, worms, and other infections that made the entire ecosystem worse. It harmed their reputation because people using machines crawling with malware just blamed Windows for being bad. And it harmed legit Windows users by allowing worms like WannaCry and NotPeyta to spread at the speed of light.

Ah that all makes sense. Thanks folks for shedding more light into it.

I was in high school building PCs and all I remember was FCKGW because $200 was way too much for me (or my parents) for an intangible key.

I don't mind paying for Windows (even if it were $200), but like anybody else just want to pay the minimum. Seems like keys on the Mart should be fine and have been, considering I have two of them and they have installed/activated fine and have never been revoked.

It's probably just skirting some volume license selling thing (or they are just completely legit).

If the keys are salvaged from recycled computers, the EU courts have ruled that they're completely legal. If they're developer keys ostensibly generated for testing purposes, those are not legal for resale.

Your mileage may vary according to your jurisdiction but Microsoft isn't going to bother with a home user buying a key off a European reseller either way.

You can export all your data as json nowadays, but with far more than a thousand songs, hunting down everything by hand seems terrible. Found a tool that records Spotify streams at 10x playback speed, it's commercial (which all of them seem to be) and apparently using the 10x playback might get you banned. Don't really care if they ban me afterwards, but I'll have all my songs ripped with metadata in about 7 hours so it does what I wanted. For 30 bucks that's ok, that's just 3 months of Spotify Premium.
I already have to substitute a few songs that Spotify deleted and that is enough hassle.

Could you specify what you mean by "make"? If it's just making a PDF from an existing document I use Chrome to "print" as a PDF or just save it as one.

If you need to manipulate a PDF's pages/rotate etc.. I use PDFsam.

Great.

I use PDF X-Change's editor for some PDFs. If you save, it'll watermark "advanced" edits, but if you just print (or print to PDF), no watermark.

I'd note that printed output (nearly?) always wipes out form fields and selectable text and such stuff.

to expand a little from my understanding: microsoft sells big blocks of OEM keys to original equipment manufacturers, like the name implies. these are designed to be assigned to whatever product they’re making, desktop, laptop, ultralight, whatever. Microsoft sells those for very cheap at bulk rates, so there’s an incentive to buy a bunch at once, but very often a company will buy a chunk, reduce their production for whatever reason and wind up with a bunch of these keys they can’t use.

OEM keys are more restricted than standard boxed keys or website Microsoft licences, and if you change too many pieces of the system, often the motherboard, windows might deauthenticate. but they are legit, it’s just someone somewhere has grey market resold the key when they shouldn’t contractually. it’s not really in Microsoft’s interest to go after the end user rather than whoever is breaking the contract.

On the OS side, there's no difference for this between the OEM key and a retail key -- hardware changes will de-authenticate a retail key exactly the same as an OEM key.

The main difference was on the MS side, where retail keys used to have a more generous number of automatic internet authentications before you had to call in and pinky-swear that it was the same computer. But these days I don't think they're even doing that anymore. And the call-in line is just a robot.

That was when you had an OEM license, which pretty much everyone doing DIY PC builds did because they were $100 cheaper. You bought the OEM windows from newegg along with some "PC hardware" to satisfy the requirement that OEM could only be sold with a PC.

If you had a full retail key you rarely would need to do the call-in, though if you did you had to say that you weren't installing it on multiple PCs at the same time.

I see that I can upgrade to 5TB and 5 users for an extra $30/year. I don't need it for myself, but it would be nice to get my mom's computer on a backup*. If I do that, can I set it up so she (and everyone that uses her computer randomly) can't see my files? They really don't need to see my porn collection.

*I have her setup on Google Drive (or whatever it's called now), but it looks like they backed her files up twice and thus she's limited on space and I'm very confused on how the files are saved and how to clean it up.

Friend's mum has given me her (Windows 10) laptop to fix some issues with it. I've updated Windows, removed all of the malware I could find, but there's one issue I don't know how to fix.

On boot it tries to automatically sign in, but says "password incorrect". Then upon clicking OK it shows two identically named accounts for her, one requiring a password and one requiring a PIN. I'm trying to remove the password one to leave the PIN (don't lecture me about the security of this, she's old). Googling has suggested two things - 1. Going to sign-in options and either ticking "require Microsoft Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts" and/or unticking "use my sign-in info automatically after applying updates", neither of which did anything, and 2. opening netplwiz and either ticking "users must enter a password" with a view of unticking it again after a restart (which is no good because there is no option for this in netplwiz) or remove the duplicate account there, but netplwiz doesn't list two duplicate accounts, it lists hers (part of the Administrators group) and a DefaultAccount (that's part of the System Managed Accounts group), and it doesn't actually let me do anything with either account.

Any ideas of what else I can try?

Now with less breakage.

If it has weird account issues and potential remaining malware, I'd seriously consider backing up the documents and reinstalling. Of course, making sure that you get backups of everything on someone else's laptop is not fun, and you have the spectre of "do you know where file x went?" hanging over you for months or years.

But it'd still probably be a good idea.

Clone the disk to an external so you don’t miss any files, then nuke and reinstall, then pull any relevant files over.

I'd get creative with the video file itself, rather than looking for software that'll play the 'normal' video+audio plus another separate audio file layered on top as well. Instead, I would extract 'audio A' from the video using MKVToolnix, merge 'audio A' and 'audio B' to make 'audio C' using Audacity, and then use MKVToolnix to add 'audio C' into the video file as a selectable audio track.

It's a bit of a fiddly process, especially if you'd like to introduce an offset between 'audio A' and 'audio B', but there's undoubtedly guides all over Youtube - someone please correct me if a simple solution exists!
