Is anyone else seeing an absurd increase in the number of people running lovely LED bulbs in halogen housings? At least with HIDs with was mostly the crowd, but I've been seeing tons of this lately with LEDs just shooting light everywhere. And its in everything, what I've been seeing a lot of lately is people jamming them in place of high beams, which is awesome when your car runs the high beams at lower power as DRLs, except LEDs don't seem to give a care about the lower power so you are just driving around with LED high beams on all day. Seems to be super common in Hondas (been noticing tons of Odysseys like this) and Subarus for some reason. I guess it's parents thinking LED = safer, paying no care or attention to the fact that most of these bulbs work for poo poo in halogen housings. opengl fucked around with this message at 15:51 on Sep 1, 2022 |

Boaz MacPhereson posted:Active weight reduction is not always a great strategy. Idea time: Race series often have a weight minimum. Build a car with a hidden water tank. Maybe inside the roll cage tubes. Fill the tank with water before the race. After the race starts, jettison the water. When the race is coming to a close, use an air/AC compressor to pull water out of the atmosphere and store it back in the hidden water tank. Put that fuel cell stuff in the tank so the water doesn't splosh around. Win races with a lightweight car.

A beefy enough condenser to get that done fast enough probably costs more weight than you save.

What about a little condenser connected to a turbine that gets air flow over it throughout the entire race to slowly trickle fill? Not robbing power from the engine, has the entire race to fill or start filling when needed?

KERS, but instead of a battery, you run the compressor on braking?

OK OK OK I got it. On the first lap, dump a bunch of lead shot a'la Smokey Yunick. Then, during the last few laps, engage a Brabham BT46-style fan that both provides extra downforce and sucks up the lead shot previously dumped. Store that lead shot in a vacuum bag, et voila!

Yeah, real cars are subject to real physics so no free energy. The turbine spins due to the air flowing over it due to the car moving through the air due to the motor and drive train. In the end its still sapping power from the engine.

It really is interesting that so much of racing is finding ways to not get caught cheating.

Super fun. I've been noticing it more and more around me anyway.
