More concretely, they announced SCII would be in maintenance mode like two years ago, soon after they released Mengsk for coop battles. So ever since it's been very minor bugfixes and nothing else.

It’s infuriating, SC2 coop was finally that perfect formula of PVE RTS content that could engage the majority of casual players while providing an on ramp to ladder play for those who want it. And then they stopped supporting it!

I'll say the real killer for me with AoE IV is that it whiffs pretty badly on its aesthetic. The basic UI feels like some soulless store brand smartphone and really doesn't suit the setting of the game, and the units themselves are bland and uninteresting. It's not about the lack of fidelity (though that also isn't great) - it's the lack of feeling. The pure pastel color palette probably isn't helping, since it means everything sorta blends into a mushy sea of colors.

I'm inclined to agree, it's not a pretty game. I think it falls victim to the same thing that happened in Starcraft between Brood War and SC2 - in pursuit of making objects as legible as possible, any pretense at subtlety finesse in unit design is lost. Everything is designed with big blocky shapes and bright colours, which drains all character from the units. Ironically, this makes SC2 harder to read than Brood War, just like it makes AoE4 harder to read than AoE2, because now everything is competing to be the brightest object on screen with the bulkiest silhouette. And yeah the UI is super bland.

Ash Crimson posted:the lack of byzantines at launch is loving abhorrent The whole roster is a bit barren, I was expecting at least 1 American and 1 African civ to go along with the usual suspects like the Mongols, Chinese and French. It probably should have launched with about a third more civs than it actually did (my picks would have been French, German, English, Russian, Byzantines, Arabs, Chinese, Mongols, Malians, Aztecs, Japanese and something to represent India, which ended up being the Delhi sultanate, 12 civs).

AoE4 civs are a lot more work to make than 2. Way more unique art and mechanics to test.

I've played a bunch of the PUP this past weekend, so I have some thoughts. Overall, I think the game is going in a very good direction. Ottomans feel quite familiar when played the first time. Their eco has no special tricks, so it is fairly approachable. However, in their current state in PUP, they lack polish. Some building models seem to be missing (most notably the mill), and the role the devs chose for the Janisssaries (anti-cavalry siege support) seems to counter the fantasy that most people want (Streltsy on roids). Nonetheless, I still had a lot of fun playing them both with frantic Sipahi raids and a frontline + Janissary + Great Bombard late game deathball. Malians are the most different of all the civs currently in game. The build orders are quite different, and balancing their eco is a struggle the first few times. Their unit roster is very fun and effective, and Donso + Javelin Thrower is very difficult to deal with in feudal. I believe they are somewhat overtuned, as they can easily mass a very large amount of troops in feudal, while also generating enough passive income to be extremely hard to shut down in the late game. Man at Arms + Archer + Siege seems to be the best way to deal with their comps in castle and beyond. New maps are good, especially Mountain Clearing, for some frantic thunderdome action. The naval rework has succeeded in making water fun, if extremely micro intensive because the counters are so strong.

I was surprised to find out the 2 new civs will be free and they won't be charging 5$ each or something similar. I was less impressed by the new maps however, I was looking forward to Oasis since AoE4 came out but I think they still don't know what they are doing when it comes to making maps, it's going to be just a cheesey meme map because they thought it would be a good idea to fill the oasis with a hundred fish and every sacred site, which means if you don't pick Mongols for the instant tree chopping and be the first to chop in you already lost the map to the person with the uncontested fish boom and victory condition. Haven't played AoE2 in a month or but I still watch T90 videos or w.e pops up on my feed. One of the main flaws of AoE4 for me is the artstyle. That is the artstyle you associate with cheap garbage mobile games. Literally looks like those fake ads you get for ripped off mobile games of some random farm/moba game. Not saying games with that artstyle can't be good but it's like literally years of programming into my mind and thats what I associate that with. Relic's other game Company of Heroes 3 looks much better with a similar artstyle, maybe it's just the setting.

So, there's a thing I've been doing once in a while, because it's fun. Setting up big AI battles, but setting Player 1 (aka "me") to be AI-controlled, and just observing the match from player 1's perspective. He ends up sending a lot of info presumably just to himself in chat, some of which is easily understandable, but there's a lot of spam about some sort of "superiority" variable, like 4 lines of it pasted every 5-10 seconds after a certain point. Does anyone have any idea what those mean? Early on in the 2 games I observed, there was also brief, early spam of "Debug: Rule 3 firing" when first attacking an enemy. I'm really curious as to what all this stuff actually means.

AoEIII DE got an update a few days ago: https://www.ageofempires.com/news/ageiii_de-update-13-27885/. It's unbalanced as gently caress and buggier than a cockroach farm, but it's frickin huge Ottomans got the biggest changes, with a completely reworked (and busted) military and a bunch of new cards. French and Germans got a bunch of new stuff too, including weird (broken) Euro native alliance cards. Dutch got a bunch of new stuff, along with a cool reskin for their villagers. Japan got a... weird pseudo revolution card, plus a couple other things. India got a few things, mostly lategame stuff for the weirdos who play treaty. All the Euro civs got their merc/native unit shipments reworked. Most non-Euro civs other civs got minor balances/nerfs; USA got a dumb shipment that lets them hurl a bunch of Highlanders at the enemy at 6 minutes in. All fun stuff, I'm having a lot of fun with Germany in single player skirmish atm, it's been changed up enough that I can finally force them to fit my playstyle.

yeah the fact that Europeans now get very few native american mercenaries plus stuff like the new French Revolution revolution () really feels like the game is moving past its original concept in a way that's pretty cool to see.

Project Celeste is out here in these streets selling their kidneys to make ends meet and keep Age of Empires Online alive. Meanwhile, Microsoft is out here rolling out the red carpet for literally every other entry in the franchise and even investing in new ones (multiple times in a row, no less). Life is sadness.

Definitely some good announcements yesterday : -Age of Mythology, see above. -Age of Empires 2 will get an antiquity themed DLC, or possible a straight port of AoE 1 into the AoE 2 engine. -Console versions of AoE 2 and AoE 4 with keyboard and mouse support, as well as crossplay. -Age of Empires Mobile -30% price drop on AoE 4, which itself now has 2 new civs and a whole load of polish.

Red Bull Wololo: Legacy is happening this week, live in Germany. They're playing Age of Empires I, II, and IV. Prize pools are $50,000, $200,000, and $300,000 respectively. Twitch stream: https://www.twitch.tv/redbull YouTube stream: https://youtu.be/oAsJnCkCAXo I'm curious how the AoE1 finals will look, especially since it's on the Definitive Edition, which I think none of the pro players actually play regularly. Even the playoffs I believe were played on the original Rise of Rome release.
