Obama broke people’s brains, like my father. 2010 and since has just been obstruction as a policy. But the foundation was laid by Regan, and of course that was the first president I remember. I also favor an economic lens for things, have a lovely memory, and probably will be corrected by smarter folk.

I think it dates back to Nixon exploiting the civil rights movement via his southern strategy. That's really where you get the first shift of working-class white people to the Republican party. Reagan accelerated it by co-opting the religious conservative movement. The economic restructuring follow all of this exacerbated the issues, but that happened after the realignment of the modern political parties began.

I just read it in the original Spanish. I guess the intro is a "why should I care?" explainer, but they really could have just started with their main point, which is that Chile needs a new constitution, but the current draft is a mess. The public (per several polls cited) is broadly dissatisfied with it and plans to vote against it by a wide margin. An even bigger majority either wants it immediately amended or rejected outright and a new proposal to be put forward.
