The Iceman (2012) starring Michael Shannon is based on an alleged contract killer's autohagiography, and filled with all sorts of "and then I used my seal team training" moments. But the real star of the show is The Ice Cream Truck Killer. Chris Evans steals the scene as a morally perverse killer infatuated with Michael Shannon, using the cover of his ice cream truck to move dead bodies from the scene of the crime and disguise time of death.

I think most hitmen probably get caught after a couple of jobs. Those that don’t I imagine usually have the backing of some kind of organized crime outfit where the local law enforcement are under some agreement to look the other way.

Gee, I wonder. Should I hire a highly skilled assasin with expensive equipment and all that, or just get some low life gangbanger down on his luck, give him a cheap gun and promise to pay his family/kids good money (for them) at like 1/100th the cost? I can even honestly tell him he might get away with it in the chaos and lay low for a while, so he might not even get caught. 1mil USD sniper assasin from the movies or 10k USD (if that lol) desperate person that can just walk up to the target and shoot them in the face. What a pickle.

Yeah because a 1mil assassin is smarter than the person hiring him lmao I thought it was pretty common knowledge. You pay some low life cheaply, or if you do need someone with skills, you find that person (military, police, whatever) and threathen their family. Like smuggling: you don't need elaborate and expensive operations. You just need to find some border agent vulnerable enough so you can either threathen their kids or pay them 10k to not randomly check the truck with 1mil worth of hidden coke. There's a reason why debt (for example) is a huge red flag in background checks for protective services and poo poo. The Man from Toronto was entertaining enough but that's not how the real world works. Life is cheap and easy to take. It's not hard to find a poor sap willing to give up their life as long as their loved ones are taken care of, you know?

Agent 47 is a lot more fun, though. Though funny thing is the games do actually have a decent justification for the ICA's continued existence and why they haven't been shut down by the three letter agencies- those three letter agencies are some of the ICA's best customers. In the first mission of the confusingly titled Hitman you're explicitly on MI6's payroll, assassinating a couple who are auctioning off leaked intel of their undercover agents.

I don't think I'd generally call Sweet Tooth a "serial killer" - I mean I guess he fits the literal definition but I think "mass murderer" or "homicidal maniac" fits a little closer. Also I think the first season of Dexter has a serial killer that drives an ice cream truck.

The Iceman from 2012 is one of my biggest disappointments, going completely off the rails in telling a true story. It leaves out and changes so many things that it really should have been labeled as pure fiction rather than as a true story. It goes all in with its attempt to frame Richard Kuklinski as both a killer and a family man, trying to make him look sympathetic. Kuklinski wasn't sympathetic, and he wasn't a loving family man. He was an absolute monster, a combination between Jason Voorhees and Agent 47 who favored cyanide and strangling. He might also have been the only contract killer to go on record and state that he was frequently professionally inspired by Looney Tunes cartoons. Would highly recommend The Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Hitman by Philip Carlo if you have any interest in a really bizarre slice of true crime.

I will say this: the thing I liked about that movie is it felt like the main character was so completely self absorbed and myopic and the film-making felt like it followed that focus and small-mindedness. The focus of the film felt like it kept narrowing to the point that the police showing up when they did felt as much as a surprise to me as I am sure it did for the character. He (and I) forgot there was a larger world that could be watching. We get used to these serial killer stories where the murders almost seem to happen in an alternate reality with no consequences, and this movie really leaned into that feeling and then suddenly the cops were there to say "nah."
