dunno how the show will do it but in the lore he calls himself by a new name, in a new guise, so the elves don't know he's sauron until he forges the one ring

This, but also the elves (aside from "crazy" people like Galadrial) thought he was gone. They spent centuries on a dangerous, difficult search looking for signs of him and the closest they got was some sigil in a long abandoned stronghold in that icy hell. Plus elves apparently died on that fruitless search. The High King's somewhat understandable attitude toward Galadrial is "Go take your reward in the West. I'm not going to waste more time, energy and otherwise immortal elven lives looking for somebody who no longer exists."

The elves don't expect Sauron to show up as a threat any more than people today would expect Adolph Hitler to show back up.

Blind Guardian's awesome album Nightfall in Middle Earth is entirely about Silmarillion. Did they manage to get the rights, or is music somehow different?

I just got my gf new headphones as a gift and one of the first songs she went to, despite not being a huge metal fan, was Nightfall. God that's such a good loving album, coincidentally I had explained to her about the songs (Morgoth stealing the silmarils) so when we watched the prologue she was like "oooh that's the treelight from the song" and it was great that just a quick going over Into the Storm gave her enough context to be excited about a book adaptation she never read.

Instead it will likely be an island full of wicked fools and no one would feel bad if they sink into the sea. The tragedy of Numénor was how good men could be so corrupted.
Also Numenor fought a war against Sauron where they won victory after victory with minimal casualties, eventually routing Sauron's forces from the north.

They planned to do the same thing again a thousand years later but Sauron learned his lesson and surrendered, corrupting them and leading to their downfall.

As it turns out having overwhelming military might doesn't count for much if the entire political class becomes corrupted.

I don't even think it is, and I don't generally care about bad Irish accents in media or anything, even as an Irish person, but I'm just confused on how that logic connects.

Also, while James Watt did invent the modern conception of a train, ancient civilizations such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians and Greeks built roads with specific wheel-ruts deliberately cut into rock that allowed wagons to be pulled by horses or bulls, without any need for steering. The Diolkos, a 6km stretch of wagonway in use from maybe the 6th Century BC to the 1st Century AD and used to transfer boats across a stretch of land rather than needing to navigate further by dangerous seas is often seen as the first railway for this reason :hist101:

Regarding the timelines, the creators have already said they’re going to have to compress a lot. Mostly because immortal elves experiencing events over thousands of years doesn’t lend itself well to a TV series that contains mortal humans, dwarves, and harfoots (Harfeet!).

And frankly that’s a really good decision. They can tell the history of Numenor in a series of flashbacks or some montage while Isildur is talking to Galadriel or something.

Besides, storytelling 101 is like “Numenor was a perfect little town UNTIL ONE DAY…”

Plus, like I mentioned at the start, they have to dance around the bits of story for this time period that ARE actually written out, just not in the materials they have the actual rights to, so they need to write things in a way that allows them to go "THIS BIT IS ORIGINAL AND INSPIRED BY WHAT WE HAVE THE RIGHTS TO, NOT THE STUFF YOU HAVE THE RIGHTS TO, WE SWEAR" and make it legally distinct enough to actually hold up if one of the other rights holders decides to go to court about it.
Good point.

Given the in-show map moved around a bit, someone put the locations ontop of a map of middle earth (in the third age) for people wondering where things were taking place in relation to everyone else.

Whoever made it got the location of Eregion wrong though, the in-show map has it further south at the next river, about where the second N is in Glandurin river, right in the foothills of the Misty Mountains.

Galadrial went from the far North then back to Lindon on the coast then off on a boat West.

Elrond went East, inland from Lindon with Celebrimbor to Eregion and then took a day-trip North to Moria.

The humans we've met are living in a future bad spot.

The Harfoots are just roaming around the place but might be on the move soon.

And Galadrial and Raft Human are about to head to Numenor which is an island West South West of the compass on the map.

Edit: Looks like Amazon have chucked up a high res show map here, so explore that instead: https://www.amazon.com/adlp/lotronprime

It is such a good album. Honestly given how music is so important to Tolkien's writing telling major parts of thr Silmarillion through song makes it probably the best adaptation we'll get.

Have you heard some of the songs that weren't on the original album release? The Tides of War, Harvest of Sorrow, and Doom are also kickass tracks.

doesn't amazon not own the full rights to the lore bible? like they cannot specifically showcase somethings because the estate didn't give them permission to so they have to either indirectly reference it or act like it didn't exist?

i remember seeing an article about it during production that they had like literal estate people there acting as a lore judge to see if they would break the contract/rights purchased.

edit; gotta read the thread, gotta finish reading the thread before smacking that post button really loving hard.

Pizza is a really old food, but it didn't enter the English-speaking world until recently. Flatbread with lard and cheese toppings go back to the Roman empire. Of course, tomato is a more recent addition. The anchovy pizza recipe there could have come from any time in the last 2000 years.

I don't think anyone's likely to release the actual rights contract, but they for sure don't have access to anything from the Silmarillion, as that has been outright stated by both the estate and by folks involved with the show. I'd originally thought they had most of everything else open to them based on some early interviews with show folks, but then that giant holding company mentioned earlier in the thread turned out to have bought a bunch of those rights recently, too, so I guess not!

They could still have received a license before the giant holding company bought those rights, but from what I read Amazon went straight to the Tolkien estate instead of the owner of the rights to LoTR due to a loophole in the previous owner’s rights (who had only bought the rights for a show up to 8 episodes per season), so even that is unlikely.
