The Mexican Soviet Republic

This flag is based on a 1994 Communist Party logo, minus the text and hammer and sickle. It looked better in my head. The 2d artist made the black borders a little too thick, so it looks bad in game. Players hate this flag.

Can confirm I hate this flag. Mostly because it doesn't fit well at all when Mexico encompasses most of the hemisphere but the flag only shows the original borders.

Got to say, whatever their politics, those fascist Uyghurs have a pretty striking flag design. I'd have gone with a slightly darker blue, though.

I think they were going for the steppe sky blue that you see with Kazakhstan and Altay, so darkening it would be Official Bad Flagging. It's associated with the old Tengri days, and also conveniently a stark contrast to both traditionally-russian and later soviet and PRC bright red.

And for actual sovereign entities, the Kazakh National Flag, which I'm deeply biased here but imo is the best of modern countries. In a world of boring tricolours and total fuckups (:patriot:) who wouldn't choose the golden steppe eagle?

i was about to butt in and say "who stole the flag of the East Turkestan Republic" before actually reading the post, and then actually read the post

instead, have the also-relevant flags of the (defunct) second East Turkestan Republic and Uzbekistan

that said it's unlikely the ETR flags took inspiration from other central asian states, since those were parts of the USSR at the time (which, sure, had blue in their flags, but so did most of the other SSRs), and weren't really nations prior (the Emirate of Bukhara had a flag, but it wasn't particularly turkic, and turkic nationalism in central asia was only barely a thing within the russian empire at the time the USSR came into being)

I'm not really a fan of the carpet pattern to the side that it and a few other flags do, but the central design sure is striking. I think Kyrgyzstan is the coolest of the steppe flags with a yurt ceiling on it, although the 40 sun rays are a bit cluttered. But also somebody else thought it was a cool design and co-opted its geometry for its own symbolism.

Most pre-independence SSR flags are truly awful, so it's impressive how good their post-independence flags are.

Wait, they changed their flag/alphabet to Latin under the USSR? That feels like a good story, does anyone know it?

They changed from arabic to latin (looks lot like Turkish) under the USSR, then from Latin to Cyrilic during one of the periods of Russification in the USSR. They are currently changing from Cyrilic back to Latin.

Then what's the deal with the (double) Cyrillic on the first flag? Shouldn't it be Arabic then?

I don't know Cyrillic, but from knowledge of the Latin alphabet and basic pattern recognition, the all Cyrillic one appears to say Kazakh SSR, Kazakhstan SSR. Same as the one that's mixed Cyrillic/Latin. I'd guess it's referencing the ethnicity and place separately for some reason? Or else the Kazakhs don't call their country Kazakhstan.

It's apparently an LDS symbol, so you got it in one. Assuming this BYU article is accurate, nothing creepy about having "the kingdom of god" on a bunch of state seals and flags and poo poo, nope, not at all.

the bottom middle delicate arch where it crosses line boundaries looks a bit too... idk, modern graphic design-y for a flag. the flat one with the star on the right looks much more flag-like

that said the rest arent proper 2010 corp redesign. what we really need is a flag with some horrid globohomo people

It's 1971, I think -- I see Zaire, which was instuted that year, but also the Syrian flag which was out of circulation between 1961 and 1980. However, the same flag was used by the UAR which was dissolved in 1971 as well.

EDIT: Whoops they changed the UAR flag as well. But the three-star Syrian flag is there which went out of use in 1972, so I'm still comfortable with my 1971 guess.

Because while it is in alphabetical order, I think it's Danish. Which would also explain why it ends in Austria, East Germany and East Yemen (All of which begin with Ø)

Absolutely correct, specifically it's Herlev Hospital.

They have some out-of-date and unrecognized flags. The Republic of Anguilla was a largely unrecognized state that used that three-dolphins-in-a-circle motif from 1967 to 1969. And there's both the flags of the Yemen Arab Republic and the Kingdom of Yemen (the red one with the sword), although the war between them was over by 1970.

It's like Danish hospital painters in the early 70s didn't have Wikipedia or something.
