its really funny watching them do this because i think a lot of companies over the past couple years have realized that you can't really play to both sides of the aisle if you end up being culturally controversial whether intentionally or by complete accident. the best thing to do is just lean into and embrace whichever side your on and maybe set up a separate brand for the other side. instead CNN's going to end up with no audience because all the people who liked them during the trump era are going to leave and the trump guys are guess what going to continue to see it as a plot by the pedophile lizard ring running the world

They know it's not technically true, but they don't care. It's conservative juche thought. They're just cultural totems, and they like them, and it marks you as part of their in group if you say you like them too.

Their thing is, "well, for 150 years everybody said Franklin invented electricity and that was good enough, AND OF COURSE it's more complicated, we're not stupid, but it should still be good enough now."

This is why a lot of their focus on "the left," is about brainwashing and propaganda. They don't see it as a fight over reality and provable facts. They see it as the replacement of their cultural totems, not with reality, but with woke versions for sinister aims.

They think these totems are the reason things used to be better. They imbue them with cultural power, and that means that anyone else trying to destroy them or replace them is a threat.

This is also why they bristle at, "trans people have always existed.." arguments. They know trans people aren't new. They're arguing we should return to the earlier, simpler times, where those people were ostracized from public life. They aren't arguing trans people are new or trans people are a Marxist plot. They're saying the fight for civil rights for these groups is a Marxist plot.

It's an exact echo of what conservatives have said about all civil rights movements since the first red scare.

There's a ton of these in American mythology, though. "Franklin invented electricity." "Henry Ford invented the car." "Edison invented electric lights." "Columbus discovered America."

I grew up hearing all this poo poo from Boomers, and none of it is actually true in reality, but they'll argue with you really hard if you point out they're not true.

The only people who still watch cable news (especially the hours-and-hours-a-day kinds of viewers) are all 50+ years old and tilt heavily Republican, and that is a trend that is only accelerating (as younger people increasingly cut their cable cords and become literally inaccessible to cable networks).

No conspiracy theories necessary - he is just taking his network to where his dwindling audience can be found.

Them's prime voting years.

My 91 yo grandma is one of those people, just fox news all day. Huge fan of Levin and Larry Kudlow. I couldn't call either of them newsmen or reporters, not by a long shot.

Levin's entire thing is just finding new ways to say 'chinese communist democrats' and hawking whatever book he wrote over whatever recent hot topic is making the rounds, probably trans people, ukraine, crt, or chinese/russian communism. He's 100% a grifter praying on cold war brain worms.

Kudlow is just a day time version of hannity/tucker for older people, often grifting with guest's books rather than his own. But otherwise basically the same as Levin.

She says she dislikes tucker and hannity but she still watches all of their programing over basically anything else.

The people who have moved on to OAN and Newsmax are more brain broken than cold war brain wormed silent generation no thought havers. This includes plenty of people still in their early 30s.

All Licht cares about is money/"shareholder value," but it's hard to tell how that's going to translate into editorial direction. Obviously they're shooting harder for the white retirement home demographic, but it's hard to say at this point whether they're going to try going full Fox or if they're going to try to split the difference between that and their current viewership. Red ocean/blue ocean and all that.

e: I suspect that it's going to blow up in their face for the sole reason that acquisition is WAY more difficult than retention.

Apropos of nothing, my school's spring musical one year was South Pacific, and I do have to admit that the part of the plot that turns on one of the major characters' kids being biracial and "oh my god, he had a nonwhite wife, can I live with this or can I overcome the racism I was raised with and admit I love him?" loses a bit of something when a black actor is cast in the role.

He was great in the part and in the end it didn't matter at all, just a funny anecdote.

(I'm pretty sure he went to Juilliard, so good for him.)

But elves, hobbits, stuff like that? Who cares?

I do suppose it's fair in some roles/stories that are highly racial in nature. For instance, when we did Ragtime we couldn't really do "colorblind" casting because the whole point is following the experience of a white, black, and immigrant family. So we had to balance that against giving everyone a fair shake during casting. There was a LOT of conversation around the whole thing. Great show, though.

Also ya know, you don't hear any bitching about accuracy when say Charlton Heston and Anne Baxter play Moses and an Egyptian queen respectively in 10 Commandments. Or Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom playing Greeks. Pretty sure Achilles wasn't blond in the source material.
