the United States spent $2.3 trillion fighting a 20-year war in Afghanistan only to lose and leave the country in the hands of the same people in charge 20 years earlier

Afghanistan today has a GDP of $21.7 billion and a population of 40 million people

instead of fighting the war, the United States could have given every man, woman, and child in Afghanistan fifty-seven thousand US dollars in cash, and that would have been cheaper and also would have multiplied the GDP of Afghanistan by over 100 times

One inescapable conclusion is that most agencies of the U.S. government suffered a near-total failure to perform their stated functions.

It's debatable whether the government could have actually lessened or prevented any deaths by doing its job that day. What is painfully clear, however, is that just about everyone who could drop the ball did drop the ball.

and how the idea of that being in any way unexpected is completely fantasyland at this point. The concept that any institution at all actually does what it's supposed to in 2022 is laughable on its face. To wit:

Reminds me of the $12billion the US sent to Iraq - in cash - on loving pallets. Over half of which "mysteriously" vanished.

1981's First Blood: a harrowing, cautionary tale about PTSD and the difficulties many veterans face in trying to reintegrate into a society that has neither time nor use for them. The prejudice of a small town sheriff against hippies leads to massive violence and slaughter.

If I remember right, only one person dies in First Blood and it's somebody who falls out of a helicopter while trying to shoot Rambo. Rambo makes sure to non-lethally subdue everybody else except the sheriff at the very end and nearly all the massive violence in the climax is property damage because at the end of the day he just wanted to be left alone, not to go on a killing spree.

It's really remarkable how much every sequel completely forgot all the themes of the first movie.

I used to post on r/chapotraphouse (go ahead judge me for being a redditor) and while that forum was even more edgy and outwardly left wing than this one I was always annoyed by how the posters there could never recognise false hope. No matter how much of a show they would put on about hating democrats, the party seemed to be able to scam them over and over again. And when I would point out how this was just like a similar event from a few years ago people would just go "sure, but this time it's different." I think it's because the average age there was so young, basic pattern recognition isn't a difficult skill to learn. But you need to have experienced actual disappointment in the past before you let yourself really embrace it.

Teen Drops Out of High School To Become Professional “Guitar Hero”

BY DANIEL KREPS
AUGUST 19, 2008

Call it The Decline of Western Civilization IV: Blake Peebles, a teenager in North Carolina, recently dropped out of high school to pursue his dream of playing music. While this sounds like an everyday occurrence, there is a catch: Peebles dropped out so he can concentrate on playing Guitar Hero with hopes of becoming good enough at hitting colored plastic buttons to play in the surprisingly-lucrative world of competitive gaming. Peebles has already won a few Hero tournaments, but so far his winnings include gift certificates, gaming equipment and 52 Chick-fil-A meals. For what it's worth, Peebles was doing poorly to begin with in school, and his parents have since hired him a private tutor. If Peebles lives up to his high-flying Guitar Hero dreams, he could earn up to $80,000 a year on the competitive circuit, though groupies should be slightly harder to come by.
