If Solitar's attack spell "blows away mana" then maybe limiting it results in a smaller hitbox.

I wonder if Frieren has become so good at concealing her mana that she can reverse it to spoof herself to seem more powerful than she is.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE DEAD, MOTHERFUCKER?

she's trying to win as efficiently as possible so that if some demon analyzed the battle mana or whatever like solitar did they would be less likely to suspect what her true capacity is. seems like she's playing a very long game

Regarding Frieren herself though, why does she keep limiting her mana output? I mean, I see two possibilities: at full power Frieren mid diffs Solitar, or she's still weaker in a straight up fight but can look for an opportunity that would otherwise not happen where Solitar leaves herself open. I feel like in previous chapters she's said something to the effect of the latter, but I'm not sure and if it ends up being the former case, one has to wonder why she bottles it up.

My guess is that her mana output is so large that it acts as a beacon for demons all around her. If she is 50 miles away from a demon and not suppressing her mana it literally looks like an orbital strike coming down from the sky.

Sleep, rest, do your best.
Is it going to turn out that suppressing your mana is basically like working out and Freiren suppressing it has made her mana insanely huge?

Frieren just knows to never, ever, ever show your whole hand to a demon. Even if victory seems assured.

Jam Buddies

Yeah, she literally says that she has to kill Solitar faster, when Solitar brags about how "I know you're concealing your true power, but I haven't told anyone else"

She doesn't show her true full power because she doesn't want people to realize it exists. Even if it means taking more damage in the moment, she will heal and survive that.

And Have there? We have a sample size of 3 and of those 1 was such a regular guy that frieren couldnt guess how old he was.
Theyre not completely alien in thought, they just have a sense of time thats proportional to their lifespan. Id wager frieren and serie are just weirdos, even by elf standards.

Serie throws a lot of the same creepy, dead-eyed smug looks as Solitar but that could just come down to the artist. It would be interesting to get more into why she dislikes Frieren so much; seems like a fundamental philosophical rift between the two of them, but Serie seems to view Frieren as a slacker, indicating Frieren has also been hiding her true capabilities from Serie.

I am sorry. I have no vices for you to exploit.

We know Fern could see the disturbance in Serie's mana. Can she see Frieren's? I feel like that was what initially drew Frieren's interest at the beginning of the manga, although I haven't reread in ages so I could be misremembering.

One reason Frieren may still be suppressing her mana is because Solitar is an "unknown" Great Demon. We already know from Frieren's own advice that for a demon of such power for be unknown by humanity would mean that they left no survivors from any encounter. I think that she doesn't want to show her hand because a whole variety of things could happen including Solitar simply pulling some trick that allows her to flee Frieren because she's decided that the mana difference is now unfavorable. Then either Solitar goes to kill Denken with Macht or Solitar gets away entirely until she comes back, centuries later, to gently caress with Frieren again.

I'm not sure whether to hope for a high quality studio that'll plump down on the fights and expressions to expand on them a bit, or for a smaller studio that'll keep the budget to consistent art style to keep the manga's feel by largely ignoring fights.

The mana suppression thing I always thought was practically useful for hiding but also obviously seemed to strengthen your overall amount of mana you had if you kept doing it.

I'd have to go back and read it again but when frieren's master taught her to do it, it came off like she was sort of bemused and bullshitting a bit and thinking like, "I wonder what'll happen if I have this elf girl suppress her mana for centuries?" Basically she was teaching Frieren the technique for the practical reasons of hiding and efficiently using mana, but also to see if doing it for hundreds of years turns her into Goku.

The core of Frieren is finding the beauty in the trivial day-to-day. Rather than flashy combat magic or elaborate battle scenes, I'd much prefer they give it to someone who'll focus on the beauty of the sunset, the wonder of the flower bed making spell, and things like that.

I don't think there's ever been any hint of anything like this. The elves don't have tons of mana because they suppressed it, they have tons of mana because they're extremely old and mana rises with age.

Yeah, I would love if the combat was slightly flashier animated version of this, while day-to-day moments with Fern and Stark on random inane quests and mimics received lavish attention.

I'd want the crew currently doing Call of the Night. They knew how to make the chill vibe of most of the story beautiful and the rare action scenes impactful.

Serie actually mentions that Frieren's technique has come at the cost of her mana somewhat over the course of her long long life. There's basically no reason to suppress your mana like Frieren unless you intend to become a weapon for killing Demons.

but she also seems to be doing it? or is there some other implication to the fact that she has a faint mana instability that Fern can see and others can't? I guess plausibly in her case it's a matter of it being a thing to do, and therefore something one eventually does, having all the time in the world

It's probably a combo of 'thing to do' and also 'all the better to kill demons when I need to' for Serie. The mana instability is a thing both she and Frieren have because it's not actually possible to suppress your mana at all times without any sign of it even if it's nearly impossible to spot.

That show was the result of a prototype AI art generator that was told to make a late 90s canadian CGI show but someone added "+ anime" to the parameters which made it sample a bunch of Masamune Shirow's works but with a safety filter turned on to tone down the horny. The results were not great but it's a learning experience to be sure.
