I'd wager the pigeon's alive. Might've dusted its tailfeathers on the leading edge of the wing, but it was going as fast as the plane, and that's pretty clearly a 737, not a widebody with a GE90 under the wing.

There's also some serious "challenge accepted" vibes from its leaning into the wind when the engine spooled up rather than just flying away right then.

I swear I just saw this podcast posted but it must have been in a different thread since looking back I don't see it in this one. Unless I'm completely blind in which case apologies for the double post.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSSAHPFwJ-A

Fighter Pilot Podcast recently did an episode on aerial fire fighting. I just listened to it on a long drive home this afternoon, and it's one of the more fascinating episodes they've done. Lots of really cool info about the people, the tactics, and the aircraft they use. A lot of the procedures they use are very similar to military close air support. One thing I learned is that the way phos-check works is that as it heats up/burns, it releases a fire-retardant gas that helps prevent or reduce fire. According to the guest it makes a huge difference compared to just dropping regular water.

Also, are there multiple civilian-owned MiG-29's in a grey and white splinter camouflage paint scheme out there? I saw one parked at the Mammoth Yosemite airport as I was driving by, just hanging out on the ramp (near what looked like a Cal Fire CH-47, incidentally).

I suppose it might be a static display. I found this recent article that says there’s only one privately owned flyable MiG-29 in the US.

That would be a sweet-rear end mod, because unlike actual bombs/guns, it's a good thing instead of a violent thing.

Not that I would mind violent mods, but MS has a bug up their rear end about them.

Paul Allen technically doesn't own anything anymore with his being dead and all, and his was sold off along with most of his collection, which crippled a pretty decent armor and aviation museum at Paine Field.

18x Spitfires, 4x Hurricanes. I think I'm right in saying this is all the surviving airworthy Mk1 Spits and Hurris in one place?

I see the flying list also included a Mi-24 Hind gunship, which is an interesting bit of alternative history on the Imperial War Museum's part!

#2 isn't ALWAYS bad...

Those are almost certainly mostly not Mk Is. A goodly number of the surviving Spitfires are Mk Vs of one flavor or another, and late/postwar Griffon Spitfires are heavily represented in the survivors as well.

Doesn’t matter except to rivet counters, and holy gently caress that noise.

:allears:

Oh yeah, I know most of those 18 Spits are MkVs and MkIXs (plus later marks and trainers conversions). But that formation includes three Spitfire Mk1s and three Hurricane Mk1s and I'm pondering whether that is all the airworthy 'Battle of Britain spec' ones, all flying at the same time.

Fakedit: Just ran through the list, and there's a fourth Spitfire Mk1 - the one rebuilt from a wreck in the sand on the beach at Calais - now based in the US. And there's also the RAF's Mk2 which is a genuine BoB veteran but wasn't at Duxford.

This video is why those Red Bull pilots were dummies. The people behind this research went to the FAA saying they wanted to crash a 727, the FAA said hell no. So they went to Mexico and the Mexican government said fine, so long as your checks clear and you have pilots on board until you’re in the middle of the desert.

Just got off my first A220 flight, 5 hours worth. I like it. Seems to be a bit quieter than most, windows seem a titch larger too. Was up front and the seats were comfortable. Not dreading the flight back next week at least.

Also finally had an opportunity to watch Maverick courtesy of the IFE. I enjoyed it. Of course you have to turn off certain aspects of your brain because ~move/entertainment~ but, I found it enjoyable. Not OMG AWESOME but a good watch.

A220s, at least in Delta’s configuration are fine in back too. Seats are a bit wider than the narrow body Boeings, they’re like the not as bad international economy configs.

Relatedly, I was on a walk with my wife in the hills of Oakland California yesterday, and we saw and heard what I thought was a B-17 flying some distance away, but I didn't have my phone on me to confirm. Yes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Boeing_727_crash_experiment?wprov=sfti1

quote:

The flight was piloted by captain Jim Bob Slocum, then controlled remotely by Chip Shanle, a former United States Navy pilot who works at American Airlines.

The airplane took off from General Rodolfo Sánchez Taboada International Airport in Mexicali, with three flight crew and three support jumpers, as well as a number of crash dummies, and with a chase plane Cessna Skymaster following close behind. As the flight progressed towards the Sonoran Desert of Baja California in Mexico, its occupants parachuted to safety via the 727's ventral airstair. Slocum was the last one to leave the jet, three minutes before impact. Shanle then flew the jetliner by remote control, from the chase plane.
