Charles Leclerc is completely saved by the fact Ferrari is so incompetent that his fraudulence is hidden by theirs.

At least Lewis could compete with Max.

In a world of a cost cap and an investor-owned team (instead of the Williams family), I don't think they'll need Latifi or his cash once his contract is up. I think De Vries might be a good option there, but in any case you can see that it's not just Albon working miracles, it's Latifi who can't push this car hard enough in the dry to get speed.

Albon is confirmed for next year, who else they bring in I would imagine it's not Latifi but they could probably compete more next year with two real drivers.

I guess even wildly rich people have feelings, I forget they are real people.

It's hard to answer because a lot of drivers brought personal backing to teams but ones who are actually good tend not to get called pay drivers because it's a pejorative term.

I think Diniz is a pretty fair historical comparison to Stroll and is probably the best guy who was mostly seen as a pay driver, i.e. was mostly hired for his funding rather than his results. He was able to embarrass his "real driver" teammates on occasions.

Did they not? In the early Honda hybrid turbo days? Debatable whether it’s worse to finish reliably slow or not even finish, I guess.
