Yeah teenage libertarian is forgivable because the narcissism and "I should be allowed to do whatever I want" is immediately appealing to mush-brained teens.

But if you hit adulthood and you're finding excuses for slavery and rape and child labor and still feel you are entitled to unlimited freedom but everyone else should have to follow your nonsense rules, then you're fundamentally broken.

Like if you don't immediately spot the problem with "me being told I have to wear pants or get a driver's license is slavery, but me actually owning slaves should be allowed" then your brain is pudding and you need to be medicated or in jail before you inevitably act on your sociopathic tendencies.

I, too, was a teenage libertarian shithead. Carried some conservative beliefs through college too, which unfortunately stifled some opportunities for fun. It was only getting back into the real world (and seeing police brutality firsthand at the G20) that turned me around.

Who's got that tweet from the guy who was like "I was a libertarian until I tried MDMA and realized other people also have feelings"?

Teenage brains aren't cooked yet, the ability to empathize with other people hasn't fully developed along with things like risk judgements.

Libertarianism is literally like being an edgy offensive teen, one day you realise that other people actually have feelings and give up on it, or you double down and become a complete failure of a human being

Also a lot of teen "libertarians" have/had literally put no more thought into it than "I like weed and don't hate gays, but I do hate paying taxes on my McPayCheck"!! Its an extremely low effort political philosophy.

Also, those few open pedos out there pretty quickly figure out theres only one corner of the political compass with a place for them that isnt a gulag or a grave.

Class solidarity, basically. They were either too rich for it to really matter or too poor for it to really matter.

I think it might be challenging to be friends with right leaning folks as many of their political positions tend to exclude a lot of people from personhood, such as non-whites or, in this case, minors.

The r/l mixup among non-native English speakers from Asian countries is a real thing. I taught ESL in Korea and it’s one of those things you have to drill people on. Native English speakers have a ton of gently caress ups in other languages for similar reasons involving sounds or sound pairings that aren’t found in English too.

So yeah, you can get misspellings like that when someone is trying to phonetically spell a word.

Assholes do use it as a dumb racist stereotype, though. That is very true.

Edit: this varies depending on the native language of coureser. It’s been forever since I’ve done this but iirc Japanese and Korean native speakers had the roughest time and iirc it was much less of an issue for some Chinese and Vietnamese speakers but I don’t have much personal experience with teaching students from there, just anecdotes from acquaintances who did.

Japanese for sure doesn't have an L or an R sound, but does have a consonant that is sort of like both. So people who understand English by filtering it through their own consonant vocabulary - and especially people who know an english word because it got adopted as a loanword - can easily get mixed up between the two. I assume Korean is similar.

He's a wisecracker!
Japanese, and I believe Korean, have a single liquid sound that puts the tongue half way between the teeth, where we put it to make an L sound, and the back of the palate, where we make an R. So making that distinction is difficult when you've been trained since birth a certain way. It's also way people doing racist accents sometimes make all L sounds and sometimes all Rs.

the Korean alphabet is called "hangul" so they have the sound, but I believe it's interchangeable with 'r'. Japanese doesn't really have an "l" sound, though.

kdrudy
Sep 19, 2009

The Japanese equivalent is typically romanized as an r consonant (ra, re, ri, ro, ru) but as others have said, it's not exactly an r sound so it goes both ways.

Most just don't hear the difference between the L and R, in the same way that many native English speakers can't hear the rolled R in words like "Madrid".

Also the Japanese word above "Home Erectronics" actually says "Air gun" ?!?
