That third panel of the first comic just makes it. It's still funny if you remove it, but that panel included just makes it top tier.

There's something about these last few Crankshaft strips where Batiuk has been trying to hit the middle point of his art style and Mort Walker's, and it's mostly just resulted in everyone looking kinda weirdly off-model.

Just to make sure we've established this at some point, right now TomBat's just ("just", he says) the writer for both strips. Crankshaft art is currently handled by Dan Davis, who also contributes to the Paws Inc. industrial combine. Since we're still under the BSS umbrella, he also was a part of the team for the all-ages Batman: Brave and the Bold comic book tie-in series for the animated show.

Thefts have come up a few times in these stories and fit the bill for “professional criminals we can root for” nicely.
Slavery and drugs are right out.
Presumably things like smuggling and gambling would have been fine?

I don’t remember how much detail we got in the intro.

Ah, yeah, pretty vague:

From the entry on The Network in the Modesty Blaise Companion:

quote:

We are told that when the old Professor Modesty had taken care of for several years and who had given her a remarkable education, died, Modesty made her way to Tangier wand was soon employed in one of the casinos controlled by Louche, a small time gangster. When rivals killed him Modesty took over the remnants of his gang and over the next two years forged it into the The Network. Its many activities included smuggling, currency, insurance and gold scams, industrial espionage services and jewellery and art thefts. It never dealt in drugs or vice and and if the need arose, would kill those who did.
