Lilou Wadoux has been selected for the Hypercar rookie test. Would be quite something if that turned into an actual drive. Doriane Pin gets and LMP2 test.

Discord context: I think the Ukrainian military was able to capture one of Russia’s highest tech tanks fully in-tact, and that one can indeed shift into H.

At least the 15-minute highlights are still up for Fuji 6 Hours, honestly that might be all you need unless you really want a background noise race.

I wonder what's up with fuji, they were supposed to do the 2022 fuji race live and they didn't and now they made the video private in less than a single day. Monza 2022 have the full race up since months.

they...absolutely did the race live on the app? I think the US coverage was the first hour and the last 1.5 hours, which is weird but that's how it goes.

Monza wasn't up right away either, I still think the Fuji 2022 round will come up on YouTube eventually but probably was just marked 'public' early.

This weekend is the finale of the IMSA championships, in the form of Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTa8bZAfjPQ

Enjoy some highlights of the 1998 race, where the Le Mans-winning Porsche 911 GT1 '98 took to the skies.

Notably this year is the 25th edition of the race, first sanctioned as IMSA, essentially the proof of concept for and the start of the American Le Mans Series, and continuing now after reconciliation with Grand-Am and formation of the current iteration of IMSA. With a major hurricane set to hit west Florida and possibly move through Georgia and the southeastern US this week and Saturday, there's even a chance the race is delayed to Sunday, which could be interesting as on-track action is apparently banned at the track during church hours (10-noon Sundays).

Most importantly, the week after the race has a major publicized group test for the upcoming GTP class in IMSA, aka the Hypercars. Apparently all of the cars due to run in IMSA next year are going to appear, except for Porsche -- so that means Acura, BMW, and Cadillac.

I'd missed that Frits Van Eerd had joined the hallowed ranks of motor racers doing crimes to fund their racing.

https://www.motorsport.com/imsa/news/racing-team-nederland-withdraws-petit/10375091/

RTN car not running at Petit but given they just pay TDS and he's been chucked out of the sponsor, I suspect that's them done even if this doesn't go full Scott Tucker.

ah, stepping down as CEO, that's ballgame.

So this would've been the end of their season anyways - don't think they were in ELMS or coming to one-offs in the WEC this year, focusing just on the U.S. And the IMSA season is coming to a close with Petit this weekend. It's not exactly pulling the plug mid-way through a season, but it leaves big questions about if RTN is coming back next year (they probably won't if FvE has to spend his own money to do it I'm guessing).

Sports car racing, got to love it.

Yeah, it's a badge engineering entry anyway much like G-Drive was, so maybe TDS will just have a different name on the same program with at least one different driver somewhere next year in the same was as Algarve Pro did run the 45 in WEC this year even though it was less orange.

harperdc
Jul 24, 2007

Yeah, hoping TDS can just swap a new customer in for IMSA or ELMS next year, that would be the worst fallout from the whole ordeal. Van Erd can face whatever consequences the Dutch government deem fit and can prove in a court of law, but hopefully it doesn’t sink their P2 team operator.

Still curious and waiting to see what the WEC class structure will be next year, I know for sure GTE Pro is gone (part of the reason I went to Fuji this year) but not sure if there’s been final decisions on the future of P2.

For Petit Le Mans? I think it has a chance to make Friday (and possibly Saturday) rainy, but I don’t think it’s going to cause a cancellation as of now.

Worth watching for the next couple days, and hoping goons in Florida are alright and stay safe.

They will have some form of racing, I was there when they had torrential rain that washed out a whole section of the track and the cars were hydroplaning over standing water on their aero undertrays. Granted they called the race as soon as they hit the 50% mark and I think it was GT cars 1-2-3 on the podium overall because the protos couldn't do any sort of pace in the weather.

Oh if you click through to the hurricane-specific article it’s just John Doonan saying “we’re monitoring it and will behave accordingly,” plus the note that they can push the race all the way to Wednesday if needed thanks to the GTP test that was booked for after Petit.

We’ve got a calendar for 2023, think the only addition is Portimao early in the season, which isn’t bad IMO. Hoping that from 2024 something like Kyalami or a race in Australia can join the calendar to boost the whole ‘world championship’ thing…Portimao, Spa and Monza are great, but that means as many non-Le Mans rounds in Europe as not.

Bathurst 12hr is part of the international gt comp and is currently run by the same people who do the V8 super cars. Having attended multiple times pre Covid it’s a good event that attracts plenty of locals as well as a decent handful of international teams. Given we don’t really do prototype racing in aus it would cut the field quite a bit

Does the the track need to be Catagory 1? If so Australia doesn't have any permanent Cat 1 tracks.

Edit: I guess The Bend is Cat 2?

I don't think WEC requires cat 1.

But Bathurst they wouldn't let the F5000s race at full speed and then banned them entirely so I doubt they're letting something that can worry an indycar out there any time soon.

WEC definitely doesn't require grade 1, as Sebring is grade 2. That said, Bathurst would be a terrible idea. The Bend, however, has proven itself decent for multiclass racing with the Asian Le Mans Series and I'd love to see it get a major world championship round.

The plus of these new Hyperishcars I guess, if a circuit was ok for the old LMP2, it's going to be fine.

Yeah, it's a shame the AsLMS race there was overshadowed by the eastern half of Australia being on fire, and COVID looming. It's the one real option they have now that's relevant for WEC, Bathurst isn't suitable at all and none of the other permanent circuits are at that "grade 2 but probably 1 if they paid the F1 tax" level.

I think the WEC is also trying to stick with Grade 1 circuits outside of Sebring and Le Mans which are kind of grandfathered in, every other circuit they've run through the history of the series has been Grade 1 (from memory - Spa, Fuji, Bahrain, COTA, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Silverstone, Nurburgring, Mexico City, Portimao...).

Yeah I can’t remember if that was rumored or on a pre-pandemic list, but it’s definitely there. And the idea of F1 also going there means it’d obviously be grade 1 as well.

F1 apparently gave Kyalami a list of changes, which given that practically the entire track was renovated not that long ago probably means F1 is not going there regardless of how much Hamilton desperately wants it.
