Just now four guards on either side of the coffin took off their big bear butts and some of them were collected and transported to lord knows where by a man still wearing his, while others took theirs off but kept holding it. e: now I see why, but this is really an amazing feat of choreography, if nothing else. The eight soldiers actually bearing the coffin need to take their hats off for (obvious) practical reasons, as well as for ones of etiquette. But they also don't have a free hand to carry their hat, so another soldier takes it off them and carries it. The officers leading and escorting the bearer party also remove their hat (but only as a sign of respect) but have a hand free to carry it.
