The author has spent decades honing their craft, produced countless peerless works that stood the test of time against countless critics.

Their most dangerous foe is the opinions of a doofus who has never written anything

I feel like the misinterpretation got popular because people wanted to be 'correct' about how they understood and enjoyed media (and win arguments about it online) even in the face of the author disagreeing with them.

Ultimately its a futile endevour because the need to be right is a self imposed challenge external to the medium.

I think this gets to the heart of a lot of arguments about literary analysis. And not just arguments online. Or just about literary analysis.

my read is that Operant is annoyed that people think Allison should immediately bust out a self-actualizing one liner and punch Jadis and/or her Machine, instead of being deeply traumatized and vulnerable to the appeal of existential nihilism.

Well, of course she shouldn't be traumatized. Trauma is bad. :eng101:

Operant, the direction of this chapter, with the focus on Allison's broken psyche and inner torment heightened by having to deal with Jadis's haranguing about the futility of her chosen path is bog standard white self importance while ignoring the greater problems that can't be resolved with self care.

The story must move on to action to quickly resolve this silly Jagganoth thing and focus on the importance of global worming.

I remember seeing the "balanced breakfast" at the end of every cereal commercial as a kid and it was definitely too big a wheel for me to master. No wonder Allison wants to go back to bed, I definitely would.
