its funny you always see them going "but we teach that the empire is bad!" but i was never taught a single thing about the british empire and just sorta absorbed ambiently that it was a good thing. the whole thing of "the countries that we colonised were left in a terrible state by the time we left, therefore it was good" is just plain stupid though. its like "look at the state of this person AFTER i kicked the poo poo out of them, it wasn't like this when I began kicking the poo poo out of them I can tell you!"

At school in the 60s/70s* I don't recall specifically being taught about the British Empire, I do remember colouring in maps in junior school with lots of pink. I guess most of us left school with a vague impression that the British Empire was A Good Thing bringing peace and harmony, bureaucracy and some darn good railways to the uncivilized. I do recall a debate at school (but not what it was about) where one of the 6th form boys started talking about Parnell / Irish nationalism which was news to me! It's not until you find out things such as the Union Flag was known as The Butcher's Apron (which I found out when I attended a Socialist Workers meeting at uni) and want to know why our benign occupation was viewed in that way, and when you meet people from other lands who were under the Empirical Boot etc that you start to get a different view. I can't understand why the Right are so reluctant to have details of our history of occupation displayed in, for example, National Trust properties. I would have thought they would have been proud of the murder and mayhem committed in the name of Empire. *just 2/3 terrestrial TV channels depending where you lived, no satellite tv, no internet, no blogs, a handful of establishment-promoting newspapers (except for Morning Star) so little to get an alternative viewpoint.

There had never been any hint we'd done that in any media or schoolwork i'd been exposed to
