Yeah, it's a straight downgrade. Like, the control to shut off all lights doesn't even look like a button anymore. It's just a text label but if you tap it, it does the thing.

The watch app is worse too, the favorites category is gone so toggling lights I use the most requires more menu diving.

Holding an accessory down and getting a menu instead of the controls is some baffling-rear end UI.

It does a thing like this for the 3D Portrait effect thing too. The background starts out black for a split second and fades in, while the cutout subject is visible immediately. It’s weirdly annoying.

the best feature of dark sky is that it was completely abandoned after apple bought it, so it just continues working well and you never have to deal with the arbitrary redesigns that make every app worse and less functional as time goes on

tap the (tiny) icon to toggle the device on and off, tap anywhere else in the rectangle to get to the controls. it isn't great

It doesn't.

Also the air quality data is pretty suspect. Earlier this week the AQI widget was showing ~60 while Airnow.gov was reading in the 140s from several local monitoring stations.

It's gonna not continue working fairly soon because the api it uses is getting shut off early next year. They want people to migrate to their replacement, weatherkit. It's pretty close to the data dark sky made available, but not identical.

yeah, seems kinda weird to just abandon it when i'm guessing they could update it to the new weather backend pretty easily after gobbling up the original developers, but i guess there's no business case to put even a few developer hours on it

I’d like a calendar widget that shows my next appointment even if it’s a few days.

I’m using Fantastical now and it isn’t very helpful for it to say “none”. I want to know the next thing coming, no matter when it is.

Does that exist?

I believe that the Apple Calendar widget does this already, at least I've seen it done before. But I think it only shows the next thing for the current week, not stuff weeks ahead. So for Wednesday it should show stuff for Saturday, Sunday, etc.

The small apple calendar widget only shows events scheduled today. If there are none, it prints "no more events today." If you have an event for tomorrow it will show that instead. It doesn't show events beyond that.

Yeah this is right, I have events Saturday but this is what I see now

And with Fantastical’s widget, I can see the month but no info about it, I really don’t see the point. Shouldn’t it indicate days where something is scheduled? It’s a waste of two widget slots

Dunno if anyone in this thread would have an idea about this, but I figured I'd ask anyways. I've got a gen 2 ipod nano I've been using since I bought it when they first came out, and it finally gave up the ghost after what, 14 years? It just makes a faint clicking noise every few seconds and won't turn on as of last night. I have a gen 4 nano I bought ages ago as a backup and wound up never using, currently using it right this instant but it has to be hooked up to an anker battery constantly because the internal battery is entirely dead due to being in a drawer for years. What's the best avenue to get the battery replaced in rhe gen 4, I'm guessing Apple won't do any maintenance on something that old? And would anyone know what the clicking the gen 2 is making signifies?

The only Nano they're still servicing is the 7th Gen. iFixit has 4th gen batteries in stock but rates the repair as Very Difficult and includes soldering. A local shop may be willing to do it, but I'd be surprised if you'd find it worth the money.

Look there is only so much that technology can be advanced in a year, we have to have reasonable expectation.

yeah, that's as much as I've found online. I would gladly cough up a hundred bucks to get them fixed if it meant they'd be good for a while longer. the old Nanos are my favorite and shockingly sturdy, and I already have all the equipment and wearables for them anyways.

Yeah, or a way to have it select a folder (like Pinterest downloads for me) and continually update/rotate that.

How much of this ongoing image processing stuff is happening onboard devices too? Is that part of what's affecting battery life for many? It says it'll be done when it's done I guess, is that all in the cloud?

Settings, all the apps are at the bottom of the main page, each one can enable/disable Siri, mobile data and other stuff
