No I get that, but you'd think that a small community of people would also get it. Like I know why a tory council would opt to save 20p/sq m on cladding by getting it from a car boot sale, because nobody they know will die of it, but I can't see how a community of a dozen people fails at "maintenance for the potential death crusher costs a bit more than a new window" for their own building, where they live.

I haven't died of anything yet, therefore I probably won't die of lifts tomorrow, it's all this red tape, when I was a kid we had honest tradesmen who doffed their cap and wouldn't charge you so much, but now it's all the elf and safety that puts the prices up and you don't need that really, we never had it when I was a kid and I turned out all right.

GMB is decidedly less cool than unite certainly. Think they had some oik in charge for a while. And not the useful kind of oik.

I'm honestly not sure whether or not they originate as political inventions first or whether a lot of people just have an innate obstinacy and conviction that everyone else is a workshy layabout who is trying to put one over on them and not a proper hard man like they should be, and enough people together with those ideas generates a sort of gestalt Bad Takes Field that discharges as daily express articles.

The attitude that no one else's job is as hard as my job is rife though. Most jobs have their challenges which seem to be as nothing compared to the challenges in my job.

[whine]This is especially true for people who do not appreciate the effort that goes in to producing accounting dashboards, transferring crappy data from an ancient creaking access database into salesforce, creating new fields and custom objects and so on. (I am completely self-taught on it, and sorry I get it wrong sometimes). There's a reason why quotes for 'professionals' to do it were over £20k and I'm doing it instead. And as for the 'simple' changes they want on the website and trying to explain why the reports on one site don't get instantly transferred to blogposts on our website - Wordpress dissed the plugin and the other site stopped doing the RSS feed 'because noone is using it' (yes we were!) - nowt to do with me, nothing I can do about it) - and now have to do everything manual which can take up to an hour for an image dense report unless you want it to look like complete crap. etc. My job is harder than your job. [/whine]

Anyway my renewed Unite card came through the post today. I'm a Community member and wondering if I should change it but not got round to it yet what with the lifts, non-functioning emergency lights etc.

Also Cuadrilla says fracking in the UK is dumb and pointless https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/sep/21/fracking-wont-work-uk-founder-chris-cornelius-cuadrilla

quote:

Fracking won’t work in UK says founder of fracking company Cuadrilla

Chris Cornelius says geology is too challenging and government’s support is merely ‘soundbites’

quote:

Fracking in the UK will be impossible at any meaningful scale and will not help with the energy price crisis, the founder of the UK’s first fracking company has warned.

Chris Cornelius, the geologist who founded Cuadrilla Resources, which drilled the UK’s first modern hydraulic fracturing wells in Lancashire, told the Guardian that he believed the government’s support for it is merely a “political gesture”.

“I don’t think there is any chance of fracking in the UK in the near term.”

He said that when Cuadrilla had operated here, it had discovered that the geology of the UK was unsuited to widespread fracking operations. “No sensible investors” would take the risk of embarking on large projects here, he said. “It’s very challenging geology, compared with North America [where fracking is a major industry].”

Yeah it's a "UK imports gold from South Africa but won't mine gold here" kind of hypocrisy, where there's a lot wrong with the mining industry in South Africa but you can't mine what isn't economically there.

No Tory is going to propose "we should use consumer pressure to make workers' lives better in other countries" though so false pretences it is.

It's a poo poo statement but I dunno if it makes them bad. Unions obligations are to their membership, GMB represent lots of people in the oil industry, like at Grangemouth.

It's like the union that supports replacing Trident. Is it a stupid waste of money & nuclear weapons are gross? Yes. But the union (may even be GMB) represents non military people at Faslane, people at the shipyards that want the contract for those subs.

If you want a union that prizes political action first and foremost then look at one's that aren't TUC affiliated

I think lifting the ban is all about the investigation phase. It's a thinly veiled way of funneling a load of money at some of Truss' mates.

I wouldn't be surprised if the report doesn't come out until after the next election at which point Keith will try and kill it, but still fail.

The Bolsover child MP, who is 36 cosplaying a 45 year old, will lose every single vote he gained from labour if they allow fracking in Bolsover. Bolsover is an absolute shithole surrounded by countryside and nice little villages/clowne and fracking is designed to piss everyone off, especially the landowners/national trust.

Source: I live yards from a "welcome to bolsover" sign, they put plants round it each year to make it look nice but I remain unconvinced.

I'm not that sure voting will make much of a difference anymore.

We already have a few million people disenfranchised from voting with the need for photo ID, and we've also already seen the Electoral Commission changed so it's no longer independent, being now run from within No.10. When you look at what's happening with our rights to protest being destroyed, the proposed redefining of our human rights, and look at who is now in power, who is funding them and what they want to achieve etc. etc. etc.... well, history tells us we aren't on a very good timeline.

Voting for many people is already a futile exercise. I live in a strong Tory safe seat where the MP lives in London on a houseboat, and his constituency office is in the middle of the next constituency over. The Tories could field a donkey here, and it would still get in with a resounding majority. The Tories control the press, and they've managed to build up a cult following that's nationwide.

Starmer has destroyed Labour so it's no more than a slightly diluted version of the current government. There will be no difference to fracking, bankers bonuses or help for the poor under a Starmer led government.

TL;DR: Orwell was an optimist
