I have several friends in Ukraine and Russia whom I've met between 2002 and 2012 (hell, some of them I've met through Eve loving online).
All three of my friends in Russia served in the military in the last 12 years, all three of them are decent human beings, all three of them were were vocal opponents of Putin's regime and the fake Medvedev-interim-regime.

Two have managed to leave Russia (one via Georgia, one to distant family in France) between February and April, we have lost contact to the third since mid August.

I feel bad for all three of them, because they're human beings.

We all know not everyone is bad, we see them on SA. I recall one Russian telling me the sanctions will hurt the ordinary people and they deserve it.

I mean Gary Kasparov is a loving solid A+ actual good Russian dude.

Honestly I feel far more bad for people from the interior, oppressed by Russia for hundreds of years and used as cannon fodder, then a dude in Moscow or St. Petersburg’s. They chose the deal to be apolitical in return for wealth and stability, and they’re reaping the whirlwind to borrow from Arthur Harris.

Still it’s one thing if they actually attempted to follow human rights instead of let’s open the Wehrmacht and SS (and of course Soviet) playbook. Also Duzzy, I don’t mean that as a gotcha or anything on you, being German. It’s just the most apt comparison.

It's the same process as you can see right here when people start talking idiotic tosh about CSPAM (and I'm sure it goes the other way). I studied Russian way back in the Cold War Era at the Army's Defense Language Institute. Most of our instructors were Russian expats; some were assholes, some were cool, like, you know, everybody else. What they all had in common was a nearly tangible feeling of loathing and dread of the people in power. Our oldest instructor was born in 1908 in St.Petersberg, had been a reporter for both Pravda and Izvestia before he emigrated/defected to the US, and he remembered the Revolution and the World Wars very clearly. He thought any government Russia had was doomed to implode from an inferiority complex to the west because the biggest fear Russian leaders have, is of being ignored and not thought relevant on the world stage.

That's been a pretty constant Russian characteristic for centuries. Russians were always considered country bumpkins in European aristocracy. Peter the Great built St. Petersburg just to make a modern European city so they could say, "See! We're just as good as you!" Virtually everything they do is motivated by wanting to force the rest of Europe to accept them as equals.

I'm sure that Russia's army becoming a mix of actual criminals and totally unwilling conscripts will have no negative consquences at all when everyone realises that a large chunk of the security services paramilitaries are dead because they were in the first wave of the invasion for some reason.

There have been multiple reports of men being pulled over in the Moscow subway, checked against a database, and drafted on the spot.

https://twitter.com/jonnytickle/status/1573028174425985025

In Buryatia, in western Siberia, all the able-bodied men in a single village were taken away.

quote:

“It’s not a partial mobilisation, it’s a 100% mobilisation,” said Alexandra Garmazhapova, president of the Free Buryatia Foundation, an activist group that has reported on the draft in the region. In the past day, she said, she and her colleagues had received and identified more than 3,000 reports of povestka, or draft papers, being delivered in Buryatia within just 24 hours of Vladimir Putin announcing the draft.

Despite assurances that Russia would be seeking men who had recently served in the army and had combat experience, activists pointed to a number of cases of men in their 50s receiving draft notices.

One woman said a 52-year-old relative had been delivered a povestka shortly before the president announced the draft the previous day.

Yes.

Kinda neat capture though. It has all the latest bits and bobs, like those thermal camo blankets and a domestically produced gunner's sight.

The T-90M itself is not super rare, as the Indians have loads of them, but that particular sub-variant is scarce outside of Russia.
