All three of my friends in Russia served in the military in the last 12 years, all three of them are decent human beings, all three of them were were vocal opponents of Putin's regime and the fake Medvedev-interim-regime. Two have managed to leave Russia (one via Georgia, one to distant family in France) between February and April, we have lost contact to the third since mid August. I feel bad for all three of them, because they're human beings.

We all know not everyone is bad, we see them on SA. I recall one Russian telling me the sanctions will hurt the ordinary people and they deserve it. Most of our instructors were Russian expats; some were assholes, some were cool, like, you know, everybody else. What they all had in common was a nearly tangible feeling of loathing and dread of the people in power. Our oldest instructor was born in 1908 in St.Petersberg, had been a reporter for both Pravda and Izvestia before he emigrated/defected to the US, and he remembered the Revolution and the World Wars very clearly. He thought any government Russia had was doomed to implode from an inferiority complex to the west because the biggest fear Russian leaders have, is of being ignored and not thought relevant on the world stage.

That's been a pretty constant Russian characteristic for centuries. Russians were always considered country bumpkins in European aristocracy. Peter the Great built St. Petersburg just to make a modern European city so they could say, "See! We're just as good as you!" Virtually everything they do is motivated by wanting to force the rest of Europe to accept them as equals.
