I unironically stan Nixon. Not a great guy for a lot of reasons but when you take into account the competition and just tally the balls and strikes, Tricky Dick comes out better than most and if you ignore ideology and just measure by his efficacy as a politician he doesn't fare too poorly until an admittedly ignoble final defeat.

It's kind of incredible how if you don't take into account the amount of human suffering caused overseas by American presidents they can become "good".

If you're willing to accept America is fundamentally an evil enterprise then admittedly you're going to have some morally dubious KPIs to determine rankings.

The army squad guarding mckinley usually made people have their hands up and empty to go into the handshake line but since it was so hot and stuffy they let people keep dabbing their foreheads with handkerchiefs to be polite and then whoopsie doodle somebody has a revolver in their handkerchief

There was a stretch around that time where anarchists just decided to start killing every head of state they could find. They killed the empress of Austria and I think two different Italian PMs?

Lord, would you deliver these races in Georgia? O Father, would you deliver various local and state races, Father, that they aren't stolen? Would you give us a true vote? And, O God, I personally ask, from myself, Michele Bachmann, Lord, would you allow Donald Trump to have a second term as president of the United States?

propaganda of the deed objectively did not work and was a failure as a political strategy but it did get a bunch of rich people and horrible inbred nobles killed so it had at least one redeeming quality

Very possible to say if it was good or bad.

Also side-eyeing current day Japan when you say "failure as a political strategy" just to see if there's any new developments.

Setting aside the incredible racism surrounding Mount Rushmore,

You really have to admire the fact that Teddy Roosevelt had the absolutely gargantuan balls to say "I'm going to build a monument to the greatest presidents, Washington, Jefferson???, Lincoln, and ME"

The sheer (racist demon cracker) chutzpah of that guy.

I'd always heard the story as "it was supposed to be Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea, Crazy Horse, and [5th], but Teddy was like nah gently caress that, ME"

But according to Wikipedia it was Teddy's bestie, some crusty senator.

It’s probably better to say absolutely nobody in power realized quite how powerful NEPA was. It passed the senate unanimously and the house near unanimously. This is not the vote count on a bill anyone expects to have teeth
