I can’t even remember anything about sex ed but I did skip a lot of classes in the first couple years of high school.

A friend’s dad had a copy of “the joy of sex” that got passed around though!

Yeah I thought this was a near universal experience haha but maybe not. It was infamous in my school to the point that older kids would ask us if we had to see it yet. I wanna say it was grade 9? Whenever they started separating boys and girls gym classes.

I had no idea about the higher level biology aspects of how reproduction works until recently.

Maybe it's taught at like bio 11-12, which I dropped for being to hard, I'm not a teacher so I couldn't say exactly how in depth they go into it at those levels.

I understand a lot more about when you can most likely get knocked up and when it's almost impossible to do so depending on where you in your cycle and all the other factors that can be in play.

But to know that stuff, how it works, where you are, requires constant paying attention to a ton of poo poo and testing at it accurately and diligently and making records.

So even though it might be a somewhat fib to tell teens you can get pregnant anytime, it's just the most practical, easy and ethical thing to do.

Even just taking birth control at the same time daily is hard for them. So "wrap it up/or make sure he does or bad stuff is gonna happen, babies or STDs" is just a gently caress easier and more effective in the sex ed context.

Even in Alberta, in elementary school, they taught that it is a thing that exists but it is very unreliable from the point of view of not getting pregnant. Like, a one liner and moved on. Which is about what it's worth unless you're Catholic and have money for monthly testing to track cycles.

They used to air straight up softcore porn at 1AM on Friday nights on CityTV up until 2008. For like 30 years you could see boobs and dicks and vajayjays on broadcast level TV in Canada.

Teletoon, actually :eng101:

Ninja Scroll was part of their late night weekend Anime movie/OVA set along with stuff like Macross Plus, Wings of Honneamise, and Patlabor 1 & 2. There was no rhyme or reasoning to its scheduling, they just threw them on whenever they had a spare couple of hours to fill on a Saturday night, so it was always a rare treat whenever you'd catch it. But yeah, I also have distinct memories of being 13 and watching Ninja Scroll for the first time and basically careening wildly from "Wow, this is incredibly violent" to "...and now it's a rape scene. Okay."

YTV used to air the same stuff that Toonami did on Cartoon Network but nothing anywhere ever near as intense as Ninja Scroll. Ninja Scroll airing once on Teletoon, I can understand, but the fact that it was like a near yearly occurrence for over half a decade on broadcast TV is just loving wild.

The Teletoon anime anthologies were some of the best tv I ever got the chance to watch. It’s how I got into anime in the first place.

YTV got me into Gundam too. I managed to time watching it so I could record every episode from 1 to 50 and avoid commercials by strategically pausing the tapes. I kept those tapes as treasure for years.

You're thinking of the mid 90s Showcase Review, hosted by famous artsy pervert, Racoons writer, and all around Canadian icon Chas Lawther.

eta: and if you're too young to remember: imagine it's 10pm on a Friday night, there's no such thing as internet porn yet, and a tiny bald vaguely queer man is on channel 26, excitedly introing a movie that basically sounds the way they describe Rochelle, Rochelle on Seinfeld

Was that what happened? I distinctly remember seeing the last episode many many times. But that’s when I realized it was because I bought the VHS tape for it and it cost a relative fortune back then.

The real blue balls was seeing all the anime OVAs in the previews for that tape. Back then it was all new and undiscovered territory for me. Now you can watch that stuff whenever you want for basically free. It’s kinda funny having access to everything I used to obsess over as a kid and not even bothering with it anymore.

I don’t remember what channel it was (maybe FOX29?) but in the 80s after school I would watch Volton (both series), Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, and Robotech.

All I remember (though this was a 00s thing) was flipping over to Space at around 11pm for some C-level mivue that was more interested in nudity and sex than whatever the actual plot was. One that stuck in my mind was about some video game programmer that gets hired by a company that is putting subliminal messages in all their products. I think he first notices them because they make him sleep with his assistant or something?

Anyone else know what I'm babbling about?
