is there a name for this behaviour? looks like it's adding the matching colour to it's own feathers but I've never heard of a bird doing that before.

Spotted a couple of channel billed cuckoos raiding a nest and eating some eggs out walking yesterday. Not exactly the best distance / lighting for pics but you can see the bird just after it swallowed an egg in the first pic and hanging out with its buddy in the second. They were getting bombed by other birds the whole time, it was quite a racket.

Chard posted:hummingbirds bestbirds I’m pretty sure each time a new hummingbird claims the feeder by the table on the patio, to fuel up for their trip south, they introduce themselves to me. It’s probably not a polite introduction, but they chirp at me to get my attention before they start drinking if it is the first time I’ve been outside when they come for a drink. Just a “twee-tweet…twee-tweet” until I look at them. My mom can’t hear them. Since I hadn’t seen or heard any aerial battles all day, I figured the hummingbirds were done visiting. But a new female introduced herself this evening. She’s a lot taller and currently slimmer than the others visiting recently. I tried to get a decent picture of a hummingborb a couple days ago to post here, cause the dominant ones have already started chunking on the weight for their migration flight, but they are just too drat tiny for me to get a decent picture with my phone or tablet cameras. They sit, like, 10 feet away, right by the feeder, when they aren’t eating. But, nope, neither phone nor tablet will focus on them. Bored has a new favorite as of 06:31 on Sep 28, 2022 |

I love watching them when I sit down for a snack at a street cafe or something, and a few usually gather around hoping for scraps. I just barely ever hear them vocalising from so close by like in that tweet.
