I should preface I am second gen Iranian in the west, still have relatives in Iran and family friends. Both my parents took part in the 79 revolution and when I say people don't like the government, they really don't like the government.
there's a rational suspicion of protests that occur in countries on uncle sam's shitlist because that's how people get duped into supporting color revolutions and so on, but there are also governments that just suck and are run by assholes, and people don't like the government, and the people who REALLY like the government are another group of assholes who are also really mean AND stupid

this is my political analysis and i hope it helps

we need more categories to understand world events. like we're used to talking in terms of classes or nations or ethnic groups. or great men, princess brides, captains of industry and swaggering generalissimos.

but maybe we need to revive categories such as "dumbos" and "big doinks." bozos not bezos. also meanies, delusional morons and UNBELIEVABLE chumps. their collective incompetence has a dialectic of its own, becoming a historical force in the lives of us all as we gaze stupified at the unfolding disaster, which will eventually take us all with it. i know this is a lot to process but you can thank me later. or maybe you can thank me now.

Is it illegal for the FBI to operate on foreign soil (unless investigating U.S. embassy bombings, stuff like that) the same way the CIA officially can’t operate domestically?

well, so were msot of the original marxists, the question i wanna hear an answer to is, do they have an actual program? like aside from stamping down on corruption, which unfortunately is how a lot Nigeria is run, do they have anything that would actually appeal to the nigerian people, like nationalizing natural resources?

quote:

Obi's business background and status as a major candidate not affiliated with either of Nigeria's two main parties has drawn comparisons with Emmanuel Macron's successful 2017 French presidential candidacy.[58][59][60] Obi has expressed admiration for Macron and was among the officials who received Macron during his visit to Lagos.[61]

here's a recent rundown:

https://www.cfr.org/blog/will-obi-reinvigorate-nigerian-labor-movement

quote:

The discordance between Obi and the Labour Party appears most clearly in the latter’s economic program. According to its manifesto, Labour’s core principles are “humanistic, patriotic, pan-African and socialist…” Accordingly, the party shall ensure an “activist developmental role of the state in the economy by being a major player in the strategic sectors of the economy…” Will Obi, a successful businessman with a big footprint in the banking sector, endorse his party’s socialist agenda?

The question begs larger ones: what does Obi actually believe? What are his economic and political fundaments? These questions matter because, at the moment, what he is willing to sign on (beyond a vague championing of “good governance”) is anybody’s guess.

Obi’s inability to check the traditional Laborite boxes may not count for much in the short term. He needs the party as much as it needs him, and both seem willing to overlook the other’s faults while the political wind remains favorable.

The tenor of their partnership is bound to change as the election draws closer and Obi is forced to show his ideological hand.

Is there a source outside of the Saudis for the death of Mahsa Amini being violent?
My wild guess hot take is this is an Israeli and Saudi pot stirring job to gently caress with JCPOA.

There's no need for big conspiracies here.

Theocratic misogynist governments doing theocracy misogynist things is expected. It's just that a lot of people are salivating at the idea of turning Iran into a ever ending civil war.

Looks like the government has made its position quite clear by allowing the "protest." I wonder if this will lead to the government going full Taliban, or worse, losing control of their message completely.

Obviously if just releasing a story about a woman being beaten to death in police custody is enough to spark this sort of thing there's broader issues but afaik it was the spark to the protests and the sole source of it is a Saudi owned media outlet targeted at Iranians citing "hacktivists".

by witness accounts she got beaten up by the morality police and taken away and then later turned up dead in custody. iranian authorities are claiming that she died of a heart attack or something, which may in principle be the case, but they still subjected her to extreme stress and severe physical punishment on grounds of complete bullshit nonsense. while we don't have good sources on the precise chain of events leading to her death it's fair to say that the morality police were definitely involved.

i believe a police force trying to cover its own arse as much as i believe an unsourced intelligence allegation

I asked Alinejad whether she felt responsible for any of the deaths, or for the treatment of the many women who have been beaten and imprisoned. “It is very difficult,” she said. “So many women are going to jail because of what I urged them to do. I can’t believe I am doing this.” She began to cry. Soon, though, she was checking her phone again, and the videos and messages were rolling in. “I’m leading this movement,” she said, standing outside the coffee shop. “The Iranian regime will be brought down by women. I believe this.”
