oh i have a real question: where can i get satellite or nextrad weather maps from a time that isn't within the past 72 hours? even maps going back a week or a month would be cool, and i can't even find those. i'd love to be able to pull up the measurements from years ago too, there's one hurricane that i distinctly remember was supposed to smash honolulu as like a cat 4 (which would be the end of honolulu) but then it just, stopped spinning. just came to a complete halt as it passed the big island, and we just got rain clouds.

I should probably find it concerning that my instinctual reaction to these kind of maps is to start laughing hysterically.

In two days, depending on the difference of a few degrees in course, Tampa Bay might be either a bit gusty or completely annihilated.

Now's as a good time as ever to post this again: 26 feet of water: What the worst-case hurricane scenario looks like for Tampa Bay

There's some relatively user-friendly records here as well, e.g. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2018/LANE_graphics.php (much more since that's probably not the exact one you were thinking of, https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/)

track inched a little further east with the most recent update. not a huge change and obviously still a lot of uncertainty, but an ominous sign nonetheless.

I would not wait until tomorrow to get out of Tampa. better to leave for a false alarm than to stay and wish you didn't

if I wanted to shoot at a hurricane that was heading towards me to make it stronger, should I aim to the right of left of the eye?

Key is going to be how Ian interacts with the cold front coming down the eastern US (and how fast/slow the front moves into the southeast US).

anyway this is still true - a lot of the uncertainty is from the interaction with this upper level trough, which either pulls Ian into Tampa or leaves it behind to stall and weaken offshore until it makes landfall at the big bend. models are liking the latter at the moment

an inlet would have fresh enough water for beaches

the right side of whatever direction it's heading. So, the east side if it's going north, etc. You want to hit the dirty side.

So that little number in the middle, that's like the aggro of the hurricane for how much it wants to attack land? But it's weighted to 1000 so a neutral hurricane stays at 1000, just doing its thing, a hurricane that's like 1050 doesn't want to attack land and is more like a critter, but one that is like 900 is super aggro'd and you better have a good tank to absorb the dps while land debuffs it until it doesn't aggro anymore?

it's very funny to me that so far my experience has been that it seems like either forecast models don't include any effects from the mauna's, or that they do it incorrectly. it always projects that hurricanes are gonna move through them with little effect and then the volcanoes devour the storm and we just get some rain

I think it’s that the models are mostly designed for the Caribbean and parts of the pacific where there is nothing like the big island.
