I started watching it from the OSHA thread and finished it when I was reminded of it here. I thought it was a fascinating look at now-ancient technology and the things we trade in the name of progress. I used to be a local journalist but by then the whole page layouts were done in Quark. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. At three of the five newspapers I"ve worked at there were printing facilities in the massive warehouse right next door to the newsroom, and one of them still had one of these machines on display. It was awesome to look at but I never realized how they actually worked. That video was awesome.

My step brother worked at a giant newspaper web press as an apprentice for a while, I told him to check how many people were missing fingers before deciding on it as a career. He went into white collar office work soon after.

I once got a tour of a guy's letterpress shop, where they make bespoke invitations and wedding announcements by hand for extremely rich people (like $20+/each!) All the machines were antique, but the one they used most was "only" from the 1970's and at least had some safety features on it (emergency stop and two handed trigger). One of the machines was much older, probably the 1930's and also happened to be their most powerful machine that they'd only need on certain rare workloads. The owner was the only one allowed to operate it (at his own risk), because the insurance guys saw it and said "lmao no way" and refused to insure it. Watching several tons of force cutting through a thick stack of cardstock like butter is enough to make you respect and fear the machine. The presses are even scarier. The prospect of having one's hand crushed like a grape inspires more terror than the cutting tool.
