To teagone's point, the dialogue probably reads better than it sounds. There's a famous line from Harrison Ford regarding George Lucas's dialogue: "George, you can write this poo poo but we can't say it." That's how I felt here. Some of this is on the VO direction. Characters were defined by one type of speaking, so for instance one character always talks in monotone and the other always talks in a forced urgency and the third always talks in a jocular "heya buddy" tone. Stylized dialogue is fine but the style here seems to be "Saturday morning cartoons". Character simply state what they're feeling or what they believe to each other at a third grade level. What I also found interesting was how stilted the slang sounded in conversation. I played through the game and it was a very natural fit there, but in Edgerunners it felt forced. I still enjoyed the show and would want another season, but the English dub/translation/directing is bad. I should probably check the credits and see if anyone from CDPR was actually involved in the dialogue/translation, because when I played their game they mostly hit it dead on.

The Guy spends his days bicycling around New York City, until he gets a phone call asking him to "hang out" with one of his clients, and it's soon revealed that he's a pot dealer. It's a peek into so many lives, as he goes in and out of them. It's sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always touching. There are two problems with the show: a) it made me wish that I lived in NYC, because every episode is fascinating, and b) it's only 4 seasons, so I'll be very sad when it's over. I've not yet watched them, but it might be an idea to track down the (six!) web series once you're done with the HBO series.

The funny thing is I've run across the High Maintenance guy in real life a few times in nyc and he's just a regular guy just wandering the city. Seemed pretty nice.

Well thanks to those mentions, I enjoyed the first two of High Maintenance and Reboot is interesting? Liking Knoxville and I love Rachel Bloom and ofc Keegan is there so that's great. The cop from Reno 911 being the show mom is appreciated. Yeah it is a shame if it isn't funny but guess we'll see.

I was looking at popular new streaming rentals on Amazon and saw "Barbarians" at the top. And that it was also free to watch with an AMC trial so I figured why not. I'll check out this new, highly rated horror movie (that I've never watched a trailer for). About half way through this boring rear end home invasion movie I try to google it and realize "barbarian" is the actual movie and "Barbarians" is some completely unremarkable thing from 2019. I guess it's getting some sort of renaissance from other confused people like me because why the gently caress would some mediocre rear end, movie from 2019 be at the stop of streaming rentals lol.

I'm two episodes into Reboot and I'm enjoying it quite a bit, though I think it only really gets funny with the second episode. Bloom is wonderful, of course.

I watched 3 episodes and quit. I'm totally with the guy who was blown away that a show with a cast that good could be so boring and unfunny. The writing is just terrible imo.

I think it's so far doing a good job of blending the wilder stuff (the stage mom) with stuff that the people who make TV have to contend with. The whole bit with the Hulu VP of Comedy being someone who randomly ended up there because of multiple buyouts and has no real experience with humor, but she means well, the way the script gets rewritten so that it does become more of a balance between the two showrunners' extremes, it rang true to me.

Dahmer is pretty good. It's around 3 episodes too long though. It was loving perfect when the 2 pigs who returned the 14 year old kid to Dahmer's apartment to get his skull drilled and acid poured in it got the men of the year award from the police union which insanely actually happened.

Yeah pretty much anytime you hear a story about cops loving up in some insane way from decades ago they end up having long decorated careers becoming big parts of the union or chiefs.

The lastest episode of rings of power was pretty good. I really like all the hobbit side story stuff, it's by far the most interesting part with the best costumes. The Durin plot is second best. The Numenor stuff is pretty boring but I still like Galadriel.

I am finding Rings of Power nearly intolerably boring at 3 episodes in, and I'm an absolute sucker for poo poo like Legend that's basically Ultra Pretty Mode around a thin plot. This is such an obviously padded show, there's zero urgency for anything, it feels very "A Plot, B Plot, C Plot" and it's like look man, I don't have 12 hours to wait for all this poo poo to come together in The Magic Episode Where It Gets Good. Make it happen! Amazon has this exact same problem with the other two shows I watched (Outer Range and Wheel of Time), it takes an entire season to do 2 - 3 episodes of content and they end it on an annoying teaser/cliffhanger for the next season and I just walk away saying "gently caress this". I don't know who they are making these shows for, DINKs, young single professionals, and Gen Z students I guess. I don't have time to throw away 10 hours of my life on some unsatisfying prestige dross. Having said that yeah, the Harfoot segment has been the closest to working that the show has. Their lead is cute as a button in that "earnest girl" way (all the casting is perfect) and the set design and costuming really landed. Yeah there's definitely a "how many seasons are they planning to make this?!?" vibe to the whole show right now, some of the stories are just plodding (Numenor, again). I think episode 4 was the worst so far about that but episode 5 was a lot better.

So that's how you'll have a show about a kung fu master fighting ancient demons for 60% of an episode's run time, and then another 20% dedicated to a business going under thanks to covid, and another 20% dedicated to subplots involving a character trying to secure coders for their new financial venture. It's absolute garbage tier structure. I've been calling it "subplot hell".

At a certain point in episode 5, because of some direction/cinematography, my partner and I actually got confused about whether all the plots are supposed to be happening concurrently or not. When the show cut from the refugee king of the Southlands, to the shot of the village boy kneeling down to swear fealty to Sauron, we were like wait is the boy the king and this story is happening in his past?

Fine I'll go into more detail, the setting like the first is around Cabrini green and oppression due to segregation, isolation, and horrible ol racism. Chicago was built on these tenants. The themes of hives was subtle in some of the iconic choices of buildings used. But the neat little art scene showings remind me of bumming around with friends in wicker park. I don't want to spoil the movie but I was impressed it wasn't interested in setting a sequel but finishing both movies.
