"It's going to all work out/it won't happen to me" is an insanely strong human urge, to the point that you're probably making a lot of bad decisions if you aren't constantly checking yourself against it. I think a lot of the other justifications come later, when people need to find a way to explain to themselves and the people around them what's clearly an irrational and dangerous decision.
