it only hits me now that the "OS" I used for my first computering years is pretty much identical to how most FTP GUIs are still done.
of course windows explorer has a lot of it in its DNA, but with the directory list on the left shrunk down, and all this other garbage showing up in there

edit: and i guess growing up with this and not using the dos command line a lot, that explains why I hate command line tools

except for the stupid fuckin anydesk file copier, if you hit ctrl-a for select all it selects all the files in the folder INCLUDING the ../ at the top 🙄 which of course doesn’t make sense so it fails until you’ve unselected that “file”

Norton commander had a two pane interface before dos shell and that's actually what must things are copying

i got a fair amount of mileage out of dos shell on my hand-me-down commodore xt, although i still did most of the actual stuff via dos prompt because i was already used to it before getting said pc
