Oh god, sorry for abandoning the thread, thank you for the kind words about Trombone Champ everyone!! 🙏

I totally expected a bunch of trombone champ videos or tweets to go viral, but I REALLY did not expect that to translate into actual sales + popularity for the game itself. I'm not sure exactly how it took off so well. I think it was a combination of the virality and the price... $14.99 might be the perfect launch price for impulse buys / small games.
The thing is, it's so well crafted. The graphics look good, the menus look good, your animated performer looks good, and it's hilarious. It looks and feels like a finished game, not just a one-joke wonder.

It's very fun to play on top of being a funny ha-ha joke game, and the scoring system is fun/generous enough to encourage people to go back and try to S-rank songs.

I just saw a video on how the popularity of the Edgerunners anime correlates to an increase in the playerbase of Cyberpunk 2077. Companies have been touting "transmedia-storytelling" as a way to increase the popularity of an IP for a while now, but is this the first time it actually worked?

(I'm only familiar with the Warcraft comics and novels, but I doubt they ever gained a level of popularity that bled over to the game.)

I think it was just a perfect storm. Cyberpunk's launch issues overshadowed what was actually a really good game at it's core, and CDPR put in the time to fix it. Lots of folks decided to wait until the game was in a better state, and the anime was a trigger for them to give it another try.

It probably helps that Edgerunners hews very close to the game, using assets and painted-over stills from it.

Yeah, that's true. I just looked it up and there was a jump of like 300% active players for a solid couple months. It took until this year for the active players to go back below where it was before the show came out.

Valve approved my game as Deck Playable the other day. I think I was pretty close to Verified so I patched the things they called out and submitted my game for re-review. Not sure how long that takes (or if they'll bounce me back again) but I am hoping to get the deck checkmark around the time I fully release the online lobbies so I can put out a Major Update and go on sale again.

I don't know how much extra store visibility you get for being Deck Verified, but I will take what I can get right now.

It works and its been around forever.

It used to be books into plays

then books into movies

books into games seems to be solidly established now, while games into TV are just in their infancy.

In the old days you only had retail sales so you didn't just have the game sitting around available for purchase when a transmedia product came out. Plus a lot of the transmedia for games was infamously bad. Best we had was tie-ins that released at the same time so it was hard to see what each did for the other. It makes sense we're only able to directly see the benefits now that games are always available online and there are worthwhile adaptions released outside of the initial release window.

it is interesting releasing something into the wild and realizing new and unique ways of breaking the game. For instance in the LoR tutorial had to add some extra checks in case people cancelled fleet movement on autoexplore or scrapped their colony and outpost ships since it could result in people not being able to progress. So added in some extra goals to guide people through to avoid softlocking themselves in the tutorial.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the main game when we hit Early Access next week. But I am kinda excited to see how people might break or exploit tactical in the game....

The tutorial in Waves of Steel has extra dialog if you ignore the guidance to use target lock-on to kill a flagship before its escorts, and instead just ram everything to death. Because, yep, someone did that and the tutorial wasn't prepared for people going off the rails.

See also: selling your boots to buy an Escapipe in Phantasy Star 3. It lets you escape the starting dungeon, but then the story can't progress. IIRC if you talk to the king he basically says "good job, now you're stuck, start over and don't do that again."

That same guy sent me a work-in-progress video where they somehow hacked a unique background image into a track. All of the background stuff is loaded through assetbundles, which I barely understand myself - I have no idea how these modders do it.

Every background is a unique prefab that uses roughly the same structure. There are two "bg" layers and then eight "fg" layers. One bgcontroller script grabs references for all of the background layers using getChild().

The BG layers are limited - they can optionally sway back and forth a few different speeds, and they can optionally crossfade with the tempo or at a custom speed.

With the FG layers, I essentially custom-coded animations for every track, although a lot of tracks re-use animations that look good (such as lightning flashes or spotlights). In the level editor, I can drop background events right on top of the note layer - these trigger the FG animations. At the moment there are a maximum of 8 types of FG events per track. Generally, one of the eight events is set to trigger a confetti drop. The confetti maker is an object on every single background prefab, and at the moment all you can customize are the confetti colors.

When we eventually create a public level editor, we'll need to limit the fg animations to a bunch of presets: e.g., "fade in and out," "zoom in," etc, rather than allowing for totally customizable effects.

Doing adjustments to the UI in Sorceress (including adding a pause menu) took way more work than making levels. There are so many little interactions at that level that you have to adjust.
