i realize probably no one here has snapchat, but if you do, go into the map, and search the name of a city in florida. the search results will give you the name of the city with a little circle next to it. if you press the circle, it will start a snap story that consolidates all public snaps in that city in reverse chronological order (most recent first). it's by far the best way to get on-the-ground images of florida i've seen so far.

based on that yeah, cape coral is hosed up but not destroyed; fort myers beach and sanibel (the barrier islands) are destroyed

you don't need an account, i was looking at them this morning. couldn't find a way to get an individual snap's link though

If we in any way made good decisions, just set up a policy that for disasters like storm surge flooding, or being in the chaparral desert, if their home is destroyed the govt compensates those people to relocate nearby in safe areas, and no new construction of the types utterly destroyed is allowed. Also we stop letting new homes be built in places prone to this. that would address the changes the climate crisis will bring as they occur.

Even in communist utopia i don't think having nice hotels and vacation areas is a bad thing. As you described, those can be significantly more resilient to this. And if we rebuild some bars and restaurants and other tourist stuff every 20-30 years i don't think that's really a problem.

pretty much. unfortunately the way america does flood insurance is stuck in peak 50s brain where of COURSE you can conquer basic aspects of nature with grit, flurocarbon compounds and dredging/infill. no one wants to rock that boat for the same reason no one wants to rock any boats: america is a F.I.R.Economy and it's all hinged on keeping the same dumbass rules forever because changing them would screw the investor class

don't get me wrong I get that Floridians are perfectly capable of being idiots, and that everyone in this godforsaken country has a death drive that will keep them from evacuating in these situations on top of all of the financial reasons not to. I just want to know if being non-native means that you are less likely to evacuate

I'm not sure florida reporter has that much right to talk but I also hate nevada so who cares

Vinegar based BBQ is the superior kind. Everything else is just corn syrup which is why it's always paired with super-saturated sweet tea

hell yeah.

Furthermore SC BBQ is usually mustard based which is not so great
but Eastern NC BBQ is good (vinegar based)

I can't sit idly by while the two are conflated and Eastern NC BBQ is being disparaged as a result
