Has anyone got a decent rundown on why Truss and Kwarteng's economic strategy has been so devastating?

I haven't really read into it, but "massive tax cuts for the rich funded by loving everyone else" is what the tories always do so I'm wondering why this particular instance of it is causing the economy to die

It's because it's being done so blatantly - literally a replay of the Barber Boom 'dash for
growth' which set the stage for all the problems of the 1970s, but with much less chance of even the momentary spurt of growth that Barber managed. It's not like austerity, which was done with a sad face and talk about national credit cards and scary debt/gdp ratios. That's how competent politicians are supposed to sell "continual wealth transfers from the rich to the poor". When politicians come out and literally say it and then confirm that they're definitely not going to change their minds, it suggests they're being blindly ideological and incompetent and the markets get spooked.

It's also that the government and the central bank are not only out of step but working in opposite directions - the government is trying to promote growth with inflation as an acceptable byproduct and the Bank of England is trying to restrain inflation. Contrary fiscal and monetary policy is also not a good indicator of a stable economy and currency that will be a low-risk investment in the coming years.

Finally, more and more external bodies have been telling the UK to do anything but cut taxes on the rich and slash spending to boost its economy. Noted left-wing agitators the International Monetary Fund have identified the UK's sluggish growth and poor productivity as being caused by underfunded services and infrastructure, a lack of disposable income in the consumer side of the economy, huge geographical inequities and too much investment going into property and financial vehicles rather than anything in the productive economy. The Johnson government at least talked about doing things to address those problems. So part of the response is the markets going "Not only are they not going to listen, they're really going to do the opposite, huh?" and acting accordingly.

It's also important to remember that more of them wanted Sunak, but they knew that the party at large would never vote for him in the runoff so Truss and Mordaunt would never stand down. So they buttered their own bread and stood with whichever woman they thought would win. Which means it is even more important to remember that more Tories outside the Sunak faction wanted a hateful moronic lunatic at the wheel than didn't.

Assuming you just inherited the provider when you moved in you won't be under any kind of contract, so you can switch fast to British Gas or another big provider that is subject to the cap. Just sign up for their standard variable tariff

That whole storm-in-a-tweetcup thing about the cute alien that encourages kids to read and use their imagination genuinely gives me a headache :psyduck: Because usually when I see someone spilling their crazy theories I can at least see the faintest thread of internal logic or the false/flawed/different basis that they're building the rest of it on.

But I cannot see how an androgynous non-human cartoon character is supposed to pose a threat to childrens' safety or development. Especially given the huge catalogue of existing characters and stories aimed at children with fantasy characters and/or without parent figures. Just utterly, incomprehensibly bizarre. I can't imagine the level of brain-rot you'd have to have to see this benign, friendly character designed to promote unquestionably good and positive things and immediately worry about how it reproduces or that it's part of some sinister agenda.

I'd be less baffled if they said it was trying to spread communism because of the red star on its dungarees. Either that or Tala works for the parcel service of British Rail...

A lot of that, yes.

Still, I can sympathize with "a majority of these people want me dead, and I want out". I don't interpret Ash as hostile, but instead as desperate to get away from England, and given her circumstances, I can't blame her one bit for that. It's the same "everyone sucks and is hosed" as half the thread, just through a different lens.

I can't say I know many people with the intersection of issues Ash has who haven't gone the exact same kind of hostile lately.

That's a no for the threadban. I see no positive outcomes out of sanitizing the very real impacts this mess has.

literally the whole problem she has, as far as I can tell, that it is introducing children to the idea that it is possible for a sapient entity of any kind to not be either a boy or a girl. From this, a child might question why all humans have to be either a boy or a girl, and might even prepare them for the possibility of meeting a fellow human being who also calls themselves "they". This would lead to questioning or weakening the simple sex binary that is fundamental to the TERF view of society: patriarchy is man against woman, man is XY and penis, woman is XX and vagina, no further axioms required.

They also believe that merely telling a child that non-binary people exist and should be respected is the same as pressuring them to transition, the standard "they're recruiting our kids" stuff that dismisses queer children (you can't possibly know what you want to be called and who you fancy until you turn 16. i mean 18. i mean 25) along with a healthy dose of sexualising queer identities (being transgender or non-binary is sexually explicit and should not be shown to children).

In fact I think that the alien probably does help normalise people with "they" as a pronoun, if not perhaps to the apocalyptic extent that Forstater believes, and as a result they fuckin' rock and are awesome. all hail tala the storytelling alien
