For all the talk about Trump killing political comedy, Full Frontal and Last Week Tonight both did a pretty good job poking at the administration, though they never made it the whole of their business.

I don’t think it was ever about the context or the political climate for the Daily Show. Trevor Noah just never clicked. I occasionally tuned in after its slow start and it was always so cringey and stale. I don’t think much of the current batch of correspondents either.

I've backed The Showdy for years now, specifically because I felt like it was needed, and would love to see it in a larger space, but yeah, it's most of the catharsis I get out of any sort of commentary these days.

Also, Trevor's stand-up is really great, and I guess I was always hoping that more of it would creep into The Daily Show over the years, but it clearly wasn't his outlet for that kind of stuff, so him going back to traveling and stand-up is probably a wise career move.

it took years before stewart got the hang of tds. noah's legs got taken out from under him with covid imo, plus dude loves standup so much.

Im suprised he took a job behind a desk with how young he is and how much he still loved to tour.

He had a great cast with him- Roy Wood is probably my favorite tds member since carrell and colbert were on together.

His between the scenes videos of him first becoming famous and going to the met gala and naacp awards and stuff were incredibly endearing too. He'll do well, and im curious to see who steps up.

Covid hit 4 years 7 months into Noah's tenure

By 4 years 7 months into Stewart's time (August 2004,) he had published America: The Book, had run or was running two wildly successful Indecision eras of TDS (the first of which—Indecision 2000—had launched his version of the show into relevancy,) was two months from his infamous appearance destroying Tucker Carlson on Crossfire, and had launched the careers of Steve Carell (just a few months out from the launch of The Office) and Stephen Colbert (about a year from the Report.)

None of this is an argument against enjoying Noah (or for enjoying Stewart for that matter,) how popular something is should have zero impact on your enjoyment of it. It is however an argument that Stewart was much more relevant than Noah was, and the latter had plenty of time before Covid hit to make a dent.

Edit: hey fellas. I'm pretty bad at basic math. 4 years 7 months would be August 2003, not 2004. I'm still standing by my overall argument (his show found its feet by the end of 2000, just under two years in) but man that was some shitposting. Oh well!

When Trump first ran Trevor Noah compared him to an African Dictator. This was at the same time that everyone else struggled to get a read on what was happening. John Oliver, in particular, basically ignored Trump and most of the 2016 race. John practically dismissed the chance of a Trump presidency entirely, and it felt like the writers rolled their eyes whenever they had to cover Trump briefly.

Turning the light on the darkest places, you and I know we got to face this now. We got to face this now.

Are you kidding? Oliver on his show prayed for Trump to run, thinking about all the comedy that would come of it. He never actually thought he would win.

Political comedy has been in a bad place for many years now. No one wants to take a really bold or biting take for various reasons, most notably networks not wanting to start controversy. It’s a big reason why SNL has been so limp dick since Jim Downey left. It bleed into news media in general trying to “both sides” things and giving oxygen to insanity that in another time would either outright ignore or belittle.

I really hope whomever they bring in to do TDS next has some fire and no fear in them. The format needs a shake up and someone needs to bring some sort of danger into the time slot again.

John Oliver's "please run mister Trump" bit was actually when he was guest hosting the Daily Show, and he made fun of himself for doing that on Last Week Tonight years later.

Cinema Speculation

quote:

The long-awaited first work of nonfiction from the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: a deliriously entertaining, wickedly intelligent cinema book as unique and creative as anything by Quentin Tarantino.

In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining. At once film criticism, film theory, a feat of reporting, and wonderful personal history, it is all written in the singular voice recognizable immediately as QT’s and with the rare perspective about cinema possible only from one of the greatest practitioners of the artform ever.

Available from Amazon, but please consider paying a bit more and supporting independent bookstores; you can easily find local or regional shops by googling. If you do buy from Amazon, use the Smile link and donate a penny or whatever to charity.

Also available on audiobook CD, which I love (not enough to pay ~$40 for though.)

As we continue to prepare for the coming darkness, this week there will be dueling live election night shows to give something resembling comedy. Colbert is doing his usual live election night, and if you want to actually laugh, Kimmel is doing a live show for the first time in like 15 years or whenever ABC made him start pretaping. The down side is his lead guest is Bill loving Maher, sooooooo  NBC is preempting both Fallon and Seth on Tuesday. Thankfully, neither of them has this week's SNL host currently booked, hopefully it stays that way. They've also wisely not booked any SNL cast members. Corden is dark all week, hopefully we see Reggie re-join them when they come back; he was absent last week to be by his mum as she took ill and died on Wednesday.

Granted, he DID do a proper residency over a week during the Summer, so he at least showed up multiple days). Thursday and Friday are still not booked for Fallon. Corden returns tonight, fun. Seth has Tarantino on Tuesday, Thursday show TBA. And Kimmel's got Billy Gibbons sitting in on Thursday with the Cletones. Great times!

Slightly short week, Fallon and Seth are doing Thanksgiving shows (late after the football game) but Colbert appears to be ending the week on Wednesday, as does Corden, and Kimmel's leaving early after Tuesday. Fallon's not doing a show on Friday, as is his tradition for that day. I kinda think most if not all of his Thursday show is already in the can; they showed footage of him and Jerry in a cold open this weekend in a promo, and we already know the Springsteen tune is banked from last Monday. Fallon's been doing the banking bit lately, the Thursday November 10 ep had a promo on that morning's TODAY with clips from both Lohan and Ferrell's segments, which meant that those interviews were already recorded. Seth has his family on for the annual Turkey day show (which is openly recorded earlier in the week.) And this won't mean poo poo to most of you probably but British artist David Shrigley will be on Kimmel Tuesday! Very surprised to see him on an 11:35 show, but glad he's there; I give ABC credit for listing his art book title uncensored in the listings:
